My parents never officially got married, they just hired a notary to help them work out all the legal issues and then they dressed 1-year-old me up as a foofy princess and took me to a local comic convention.
My boyfriend's parents got married on the beach in a suit and dress handmade by his mother. All the pictures have them either wrangling their two toddlers or romping around knee-deep in the surf. Last year was their 25th wedding anniversary and they invited all the same people who attended their wedding (+ new additions, like me) and went for a picnic. It was great.

These big white weddings and the people who want them (or consider them to be the norm) are so alien to me. I don't know anyone who shelled out big money on a white wedding dress. It's not that we're poor, they just have different priorities. If I were to get married in one of those BtSSB wedding dresses that alone would probably make my wedding the most extravagant one my family has seen. And then they'd judge me for not putting that money towards a house or my children's education...
