Explain in depth the cost and time of you having to do that task. He will maybe be taken back a little by the knowledge that he did not have on the process you do. Believe it or not, managers and higher ups DO NOT know your job as good as you do (typically) as you are the one that does it all day. Show real world impact (money) that the task has on your company and simply say "I just wanted to confirm with you that this is what you would like me to be doing with my time" - and say nothing more....
