i still like the fact that it's not 100% certain that craig wright is satoshi. it's better with a bit of mystery involved.

I'm still torn about the whole ASIC thing. On one hand it ruined this idea because only the few mining pools that are out there now have the power to vote. But on the other hand it makes botnet mining (through viruses or javascripts) basically worthless and big companies can't just instruct their super computers to mine bitcoin. So ASICs and mining pools have ruined voting but in turn made bitcoin more secure.

Even if a single company would produce ASICs and only keep them for themselves at this point they would still need more electricity that is available in their own region, making it more profitable to just sell the things for fiat money. Especially since the trust and price of the crypto would start to go down if word got out that some single company had over 50% of the hashrate, meaning there's less risk to just sell them for fiat money as well.

It doesn't matter anyway, since the exchanges allow btc to be defined by whatever the core devs say it is, mining there is nothing more than decentralisation theatre.
It only exists in the original sense in chains where longest accumulated proof of work actually denotes the valid chain.

Unfortunately not. Both bitfinex and coinbase have stated unequivocally that in the event of a split btc will be whatever core says it is, and the "new token" will be assigned a new ticker (was going tu be S2x for segwit2x).
By doing that they guaranteed the chain split would not take place, as miners would have to forego all income being unable to sell the new tokens at the previous market price.

Right, meaning if they really had gone with the longest chain metric as defining BTC, there would have been no contest at all, BTC would be what the miners were mining, core would be effectively fired and banished, and the community would be unified behind that still. Maybe bcore would've forked and been allocated a new symbol, but they wouldn't have the incumbency on their side, and their vision would have to stand on its own for valuation by the market without that incumbency.

And in that context, it's hard to imagine it would be anything more than a minor shitcoin.
