starting up a hedge fund so i can marry this little girl
raised 1.2mm so far
trading futures right now with an algorithmic strategy. I'm 29 with a MS in mathematics from a mid-tier school, partner is a 22y/o with a BS in statistics from a top school

advice on how to raise more money?
any good conferences?
how to meet high net worth individuals?
located in Texas right now but thinking of moving to california or nyc

Do NYC. California exists for people who couldn't make it in the Northeast (with the rare exception of Silicon Valley)

Startin up a business regardless of its nature is cool and you deserve respect for it.

Wanting to marry the girl you love is cool and you deserve respect for it.

But those two things are absolutely not related. If you think so, or if she makes you believe, then you rather focus on only 1 thing on that list.

Protip: Choose the hedge fund.

This has nothing to do with business. You've made a thinly veiled troll/humblebragging thread.

If you ACTUALLY need advice on the things you're asking for then you probably shouldn't be doing it. Your questions are shit you should know day one of your endeavor.

Also, that girl is very pretty and if real congrats but you should do your absolute best for yourself, not her. If she has monetary requirements for her to be with you. Come on son.

You reminded me of this reply.
Thank you, now I am in good humor.

"A philosophical reply from CEO of J.P. Morgan below:

Dear Ms. Pretty,
I have read your post with great interest. Guess there are lots of girls out there who have similar questions like yours. Please allow me to analyse your situation as a professional investor.
My annual income is more than $500k, which meets your requirement, so I hope everyone believes that I’m not wasting time here.
From the standpoint of a business person, it is a bad decision to marry you. The answer is very simple, so let me explain.

Put the details aside, what you’re trying to do is an exchange of “beauty” and “money” : Person A provides beauty, and Person B pays for it, fair and square.
However, there’s a deadly problem here, your beauty will fade, but my money will not be gone without any good reason. The fact is, my income might increase from year to year, but you can’t be prettier year after year.

Hence from the viewpoint of economics, I am an appreciation asset, and you are a depreciation asset. It’s not just normal depreciation, but exponential depreciation. If that is your only asset, your value will be much worse 10 years later.

By the terms we use in Wall Street, every trading has a position, dating with you is also a “trading position”.
If the trade value dropped we will sell it and it is not a good idea to keep it for long term – same goes with the marriage that you wanted. It might be cruel to say this, but in order to make a wiser decision any assets with great depreciation value will be sold or “leased”.

Anyone with over $500k annual income is not a fool; we would only date you, but will not marry you. I would advice that you forget looking for any clues to marry a rich guy. And by the way, you could make yourself to become a rich person with $500k annual income. This has better chance than finding a rich fool.

Hope this reply helps.

J.P. Morgan CEO"

Arbitrage in equity derivatives. We used to be a fairly profitable prop/market making desk in a bank. Got pushed out of the door after '08 and opened up our own shop. Because we could and wanted to, not because of girls ;-)

Every now and then, there's a young and aspiring kid trying to sell us his algo. When we ask 'em to throw in some real money and join our team - since all those backtests are shiny and brilliant - they always refuse.

Why would they not exist anymore? There is no app to deploy efficency in different markets. It's guys like us. Regardless whether they use a bank, a trading company or a fund as a vessel.

You will have to understand I am not disclosing any information that could be traced back. Let's put it that way. We have significant smaller funds than we used to have to back in the bank, but since we don't have to finance huge overhead, we make more for ourselves while increasing the company's equity surplus. We're all happy.

>>958669

Since we have a completely different approach, what you describe is rather esoteric (to us). Never looked into it, never cared. But yes, we are aware there are folks out there believing in it, and in the best case are able to extract money out of the market. If it works for you, fine.

Because the large outfits already arbitraged away all those plays. At least that's what I thought. I'm surprised a small outfit can take those trades. Unless you're just picking up dimes in front of a steam roller.

market making tends to be done with proprietary capital - firstly once you get to a certain size for whatever product you're trading you don't need any more capital secondly the returns can be very large in terms of % returns

I do my job because I love it. We are 3 traders did not have ~20mln to start off ourselves. Hence we set up a HF structure. We are profitable, our investors are happy, we are a happy. If there is one guy online who thinks it makes no sense, I could not care less.

I said we are not market makers. We used to be in back in the bank, so we have that approach. You asked if we do carry trades, I answered no - We work more like MM, but we don't have quoting obligations. Is it that hard to understand?
