It's a fork of the original coin, thus it is bitcoin in some regard as they both share the both chain up until the split. Same genesis block same coin. It has a larger block size which means more transactions can take place which makes sense to use as more and more people are adopting it as is intended.

Aye, there are two versions of Bitcoin, Bitcoin (BCH) and Bitcoin (BTC). One of them got to keep the old ticker.

Both have their own idea for how to scale Bitcoin. Personally I think BCH's solution will win since simplicity usually beats complexity.
