Should one max out a Roth IRA (if american) or TFSA (if canadian) before investing anything into crypto or stocks?

crypto above all, but if you're putting enough into crypto and can still afford a little for retirement that's OK

nothing should get in the way of these gains tho

You can invest in both. Say 50/50, up to you. Most would probably recommend 90/10 stocks/crypto or even no crypto. But lets be honest here you want to go 50% ore more crypto. And there are no real way to put crypto in a retirement account (yet).

The stocks should be in a retirement account (or actually a HSA first). An HSA is essentially tax free with something like a 10% withdrawal penalty. Nothing beats that. Then max your roth ira, as there are tricks to get the money out. Just make sure you don't exceed the income limits, something like 120k/year. Otherwise its pointless. Then max your 401k (usually because it has higher management fees). Most employers offer both roth and traditional 401ks. IMO I like roth because taxes are historically and low and are probably going to be much higher in a few decades.

Depends on your age and risk tolerance.

For retirement accounts the younger the better, although this goes for taking risk as well. I would max out my IRA and put any additional into stocks/crypto, unless I'm working with very small amounts then I'd probably lean to crypto while I work on my career to bring my income to the level where I can max out my ira

Also if you like buffet quotes he is generally a no risk kind of guy. He said something along the lines of don't invest what you have for things you don't need. He isn't a fan of crypto albeit he doesn't claim to have much understanding of it and historically has missed some good tech investments

Max your tax-defered account, take loan from that account, invest loan (from yourself) into crypto. You just got tax-free money to use on crypto.

just maxed my IRA but what stocks do i put the money into? boring old S&P 500?

Yes, its an index of the most valuable public companies in the only true democracy in the world. Boring but valuable.

Max it out after crypto. When you take profits on crypto, then contribute to your Roth IRA.
