Professional poker thread

So I'm attempting to make a living at poker.

I'll usually start with a stack of ~$100 and build it up to ~$500

Then I hit some bullshit like I have pocket queens and my opponent has pocket kings

every...fucking...time.

Any advice from any bros who can pick up on that shit?

Here's my advice:

1) You can count cards playing online poker. Learn to do that.

2) If you stop at $500 and re-start with $100 the next day and can make $400/day, that's a reasonable living, even with the taxes you'll suffer.

Based on this post you're not ready. You're overplaying those queens too. If you have $100 QQ is an all in type hand. If you started with $100 and you're sitting at $500 and your opponent is sitting at $500 then it's an entirely different game. Learn the difference before you try to go pro.

online poker is fucked but live poker is still super easy. complete noobs play $1-2 and have no idea how to apply relative hand strength. $2-5 is the same thing but instead of 0-1 competent players at a $1-2 game there are probably 0-3 competent players at a $2-5 game. Most $2-5 players never fold two pair+ even if there are potential straights and flushes. You can identify players that NEVER bluff in certain positions and you can print money off bet/folding against those players all day. I folded bottom set to a tight player that raised me on a board with a potential straight. He showed top set and he complained how I could fold a set even though my bottom set was a mere bluff catcher at that point.

tldr online is tough but live poker is THRIVING. Pay for some resources, study, and get good.

how much different is 5/10 and 10/20 vs 2/5? I dont have the roll to give it a shot but I play at the Hard Rock in Hollywood Florida and I am confident that I am a top 3 player at every 2/5 table. I would say that the majority of 2/5 players at the hard rock are incompetent and don't understand the objective of betting. They don't know that a bet should either get value from worse or to make better hands fold. I try to focus on the incompetent players and not get in big hands with the other 1 or 2 competent players at the table unless i have a good hand and im in position.

How competent are 5/10+ players? are 8/9 players competent and are trying to cash in on one donk? Are people in live games with limited histories with each really making exploitative turn and river plays?

I have won 500k+ playing PLO online last couple of years while in college. Could have made at least a million if I dropped out of college. I wouldn't recommend online poker as career for anyone. It's extremely competitive, you will most likely fail, if you don't fail it will take a long time before you can make 6-figures, and the games are slowly dying online. If you're smart enough to make it to high stakes in poker you could most likely be making more money elsewhere working a less stressful and more rewarding job.

I highly doubt that because poker winnings are tax free which is a huge deal. Instead of paying 50% taxes of basic salary. In PLO majority of pros are surprisinly tiny losing or break even before rakeback, win rates are so low and rake is high. If i remember data correctly about 1 out of 10 pros were on green before rakeback

I'm not LARPing if that's what you are saying. Poker requires a pretty similar skillset to trading/finance. With a good degree most high stakes online players could be making more in those fields (or something else). Unlike other jobs your "wage" as an online player will most likely only go down over the next few years. Also, you might not even have a job in 5-10 years because you've fallen behind the curve and/or because solvers/bots have made it impossible to make a living from online poker.

>> No.8729253

if you're not a winning player you need to do more research

if you are a winning player, then bankroll management is critical

It's been quite a few years since I stopped playing poker, but in any game the most patient players usually win. Most people overthink the game. You only have to change a few things and play a few extra hands to make people think you're something you're not. The guys winning at 5/10 and 10/20 are no different than the guys at 2/5, but they have bigger bankrolls and more practice. If you can win at 2/5 you can probably win at 5/10 and 10/20, but the players at 2/5 will always be softer. At 2/5 if I bluff and show a 27o then I'm known as the crazy guy for the next hour even if I flip up KK the next 2 times. At 5/10 and 10/20 they're just a lot less likely to fall for something like that. You guys are making me miss poker, but I really hate live play and I live in the US so I'll just stick to gambling on fake money.

>> No.8729551

Your clueless dude! My mates a pro poker player and u should only play with 10% of your bank roll.
2nd learn how to play! 1 game shouldn’t put u down. If u played the hand correctly the odds would have been in your favor going into the turn so 51%+ of the time u would win the hand.

It doesn't happen overnight. Bankroll management is key. If you don't have a decent sized roll then you have to grind at lower stakes to build it up. Move up when you have enough buy-ins to play without fear at the next level. You're gonna have to play a lot of hands too. Online is best for this. Multi-tabling is important to learn so try to figure out how many tables you can comfortably play while maintaining a solid win rate. Your win rate WILL go down as you move up. Period. I play 6max cash game online and I personally like to have 30 buy-ins and 100 big blinds going into each table. Move down if you're on a downswing and don't chase your losses by moving up like a degenerate. If you play live it's slow and you get less volume, but it's not hard to find fish for easy money, but online is a shark tank these days starting at nl50, nl100 etc. Don't go on tilt, play a fuck load of hands monthly, win like 51-60% of the time, profit. Or you could buy into a bunch of sngs, mtts, heads up, whatever. You have to figure out what you're good at and stick to it to get better.
