suppose that nobody shorted.

BTC would have a slow death while people could invest in coins creating real utility for the world. Eventually BTC dominance is no more and the alts are free and decoupled. Whales would create the ability to short alt coins but why would anyone bet against the ALTs that grew by virtue of real world adoption? Shorting would shake out the speculators but there would be a true drift component as adoption takes place.
