Who /losthope/ here?

25 interviews later and my summer is completely wasted. I
>graduated with a BS in math
>worked with over a dozen staffing agencies
>applied to positions and companies well below me
>went to a career coach and spent 400 dollars for hours of counceling and a redo of my resume, LinkedIn and cover and thank you letters
>use sites like Indeed, Glassdoor, Beyond, TheLadders, Dice, ZipRecruiter, Monster, etc..,. almost everyday
>stopped jerking it, playing vidya in order to maximize productivity
>spoke with hiring managers to get feedback for not getting the job

Having a STEM degree and a years worth of IT internship experience isn't enough to get me hired for a 30K a year position at some huge conglomerate or a small company.

/losthope/ general also don't fall for all the memes that I did /biz/

How in the fuck can you not find a job when I was a 28 year old mildly autistic socially anxious idiot who took 8 years to finish college and smoked tons of weed the whole time. I had no experience and no internship and no connections. Yet in 12 months time I had a job paying 40k with benefits. I'm still here three years later and I guess they're happy with me because they keep giving me raises.

Mechanical/Aerospace Engineer here.

You guys want some advice on finding work? I work for a small business contractor doing short contract work. Most the big companies (Northrop, Lockheed, etc) hire the cream of the crop graduates and then subcontract the rest of the work out to small business contractors so they can fulfill small business goals that the government mandates. Instead of applying for these big companies, look for local small business contractors nearby and look through their job openings on their sites. Often enough, their jobs don’t get advertised on job search engines and top candidates don’t apply for these companies because they don’t want short term jobs. This usually means that these small companies can’t find enough qualified people to fill these jobs and they don’t get paid on the contract unless they fill the positions.

The only downside to these jobs is that they’re short term (anywhere from 4 months to a few years). The goal is to get experience though and leverage that to get a better, more permanent position later. You end up working with the cream of the crop graduates, doing the same work, making the same pay, but your badge is just different.

I spent a year after I graduated trying to find a job and was finally able to get an industry position making 50k. Not only that, I’m actively being scouted out by other contractors here for future work. I’ve been pointing most of my friends in the same direction and giving them the same advice.

This might not help all of you but maybe it’ll help some of you.

Ideally you meet him once, and ask him really good questions, get him talking a lot. Ask for some advice on what to do short term. In about a week send them a message thanking them for meeting, and show that you've taken their advice and how you see it benefitting. For example, a guy told me to get Google Analytics certified. I got my GA certification a few days later. I messaged him thanking him for the meeting (he made a lot of great points) and how I got Google Analytics certified like he suggested. I then asked if he had any open positions because I "think he is a strong leader." He gave me the job. Well shit, I could have handled my version of it better. Still, I think I'm in a better boat than anyone else. Basically, after a few weeks of seeing actuarial positions open up that I wasn't qualified for I saw one open up that I could apply for. I emailed him and inquired over whether or not the amount of actuarial exams I had passed was sufficient qualifications. He said it was so I applied and told him I had and sent my appreciations. I think he did put in a good word for me because the next day my application went from "Submitted" to "Under Review". I'd never seen one of my applications switch over that fast so I must have done something right in his eyes. However, it's been a month and I've heard nothing back so I am a bit worried. However, they could be holding back on hiring what with all the market turmoil. Still, at least I haven't gotten a denial.

Shit, I really wish I had done something like you. You're good at this shit.

/biz/ I graduated in may and still am looking for a job - thing is though I'm afraid I won't really remember much of anything I learned back in school beyond the basics, and because of that technical interviews scare me shitless...
Am I cucked?

I don't know if anyone would want to elaborate on my situation but here it is.

>high school education
>withdrew from cc (it was not a good school, but the only one my family would support me at)
>also obtained a part-time retail job during this, and became full-time after being promoted to a shift supervisor
>have been doing this for a couple years, purchased a car and have 15k plus a bit extra from a seasonal side job

>family will not help pay for any more college expenses if I choose to go back
>I've been working 6 days a week with both jobs but my full-time place just had massive hours cutbacks
>I volunteered to have my hours halved (40 to 20) and will use the loss to find a second job or go back to school

Now I don't know if I should try enrolling in school when there aren't many fields I feel experienced or interested in and because my money situation is not so good. I was thinking about getting a food-related job just to see if it'd be something I'd enjoy and if it turns out to be what I like then I could go to culinary school to gain more experience or something. I know with retail that it's not something I could see myself staying in as a career, and I don't want to be that person who works in a job that makes them miserable. I just wish my hobbies were more associated with money-earning degrees, I like to draw but I don't know if I could handle something like architecture.

Don't worry. They don't usually ask super technical questions, only ones to see if you can learn super technical things.

Even in this "great job market" according to the fed most new grads are having lots of trouble getting hired.
Blame outsourcing and wall street.

Just read the thread and smile.

I mean study up on the basics, ask someone who already got interviewed by them for the same position, read up on the interview threads here and maybe post.

But seriously, /biz can have a lot of shitposting and memes. Watch out and rely on yourself and common sense 90% of the time.

For example, I just gave you advice but I'm a 19 year old going into my sophomore year. Yet I know at least this much since I go to a great school and have applied myself in job connection events.
So take my advice with a grain of salt, though my original relieving point is true.

Youre getting a commision and an 0-1 salary if you dont fuck up and army needs alot of meat so you really have to suck to not get your commision.

Source: Just graduated Marine Corps OCS but declined my commision because it was the most miserable I have ever been. No food, no sleep, getting weaker and more internal every day. No amount of money is worth that. I kinda started to feel like dying in battle isnt that bad because compared to the shit you have to deal with in the field, death is preferable.

So happy I no longer have to wake up at 3 am everyday to re mark gear or eat a Beef Stew MRE at 0000 before the 9 mile hump starts at 0030.

I remember being there in 2004/2005, except I had a software engineering degree. Used to keep a log of all the places I applied so my mother would get off my back about not trying to find a job. Took about a year to find a contracting job, then 3-4 months later a government position that I liked enough to stay for several years. Probably mailed/e-mailed 2000 resumes/applications to get there, all while working retail ~30 hours a week (yes, full-time was a myth before anybody even heard heard of Obama).

I really don't know what to say to somebody with a less specific degree than mine. I got mine to write software. Teachers get theirs to teach. What do economics or business students do? I guess you apply for more open-ended jobs?

Regardless, have you tried lying? Maybe the people you're dealing with aren't worthy of respect. Tell them what they want to hear, use the opportunity to learn, and dump them for greener pastures when it suits you.
