pay debts
keep 5k left over for emergencies, dont touch this unless you urgently need it and cant get the money another way
if u have over 5k left put it in to a an ETF, vanguard.

well sweet then
idk how much a vanguard can u return but lets say its 8% (inflation already deducted) and u have 45k to invest thats 3600 safe money from passive income each year, which if u just keep in that vanguard. In 10 years u will have doubled ur money.

If you have a sinccere interest in the markets then you could use 5k of that to trade/invest urself.

I started with a little more than 3k, lost down to 2.5k and now im at a growth of 40% over 4 years.

I am honest that I don't know much about all this, but please tell me if I have this right, So I invest with Vanguard and they will disperse my money into a wide array of investments in a way that guarantees a small profit instead of the possibility of massive losses or gains, they take a percentage of the profits and the rest go on to me? Is this essentially how it works?

give or take yeah, also, there will be some tax things involved with this that i dont understand because ive done an ETF or vanguard. But, i assume you will have minimal taxes as long as u dont take your money out and stays in their account aside from teh dividend.

I second vanguard ETFs.

I would personally put most of it in a US stock market ETF at your age. An 80/20 stocks/bonds mix would be ideal but do your own research like the other anon said.

I would also have an ounce or two of physical gold even if it hurts my gains, but I'm paranoid. It helps me sleep at night knowing that my monies won't pull a Venezuela or Greece on me though. It's like my shiny teddy bear.

US stocks stronk!

But really, the US has the world economy by the balls. They will burn only after everyone else does. They are a pretty safe bet. An ETF will give you a great cross section and keep your risk to a minimum.

However, invest in what you believe in. Research will help loads here. There are foreign stock ETFs on vanguard as well as bond ETFs but I'm not well versed with them.

It all depends on where you believe the most growth will be and what your appetite for risk is.

so what u do when u wanna buy this ETF or wahtever

>make a brokerage account with a big broker, commsec, nabtrade (i use but they often have techncial difficulties, but it wont matter cuz u wont touch this for years)...etc
>type in the code of the ETF
>buy $xxxxx worth of shares in the fund

I recomend VAS (that's the code for the ETF) which is on the ASX

simply google asx vas and some info will come up about it

obviously, u can do this for international ones as well or other ASX ETFS

Check it out: https://www.bogleheads.org/

The often recommended Vanguard group was founded by Bogle, and so the wiki and forums there are good places to read about investing. The index funds themselves are avaliable pretty much everywhere I think, as ETF or otherwise, but I'd probably recommend the ETF. Just read up on portfolios and whatnot on the wiki and forums first, though.

I'd be careful about the stock market right now (inb4 dollar cost averaging) because I think we're in a huge bubble that will burst in a few months, maybe september earliest. If your broker allows a guaranteed stop, you can probably invest safely, still (otherwise it may gap a lot when the day comes). I don't know about US accounts, but look into tax advantaged accounts. My country has one that doesn't tax you at all for closing positions, but usually, you pay your tax when you take your money out of a position, so that's something to keep in mind as well.

>>821509
If you had $12k, you could do like two forex trades a month and make a normal salary. For stocks, it's enough as well but more difficult because the barrier to entry is higher (as far as I can tell - ETFs of stocks are well within reach, but that's not "real" stock trading). For indexes and slower investing, it's a good start but it's going to take a good few decades before it's anything of note.

Here's a tip, though: ask your father to teach you how to trade. You're in the perfect position, a father that trades, enough money to start trading (start with a demo account, then like $1k or something). What the hell would you ask /biz/ for, you've got an excellent teacher right there. If you weren't a ungrateful asshole growing up, I'm sure he'll be happy to help you get started.

I can't vouch for them, but they seem legit and it's the only place I really know. Check them out if you can live for free and dedicate a lot of time to trading until you learn it http://bullsonwallstreet.com/day-trader/

Didn't fit in original post, but I was going to say:

If I had €50k, I'd live in a rental flat while I learned to trade, €1-2k at a time, at the most. First demo, then carefully starting with what I deemed to be very safe trades, and then maybe into more daytrading as I learned it. With that kind of money, you've easily got enough time to learn to trade without having to get a job as well, but you have to want it, and not give up - it's not easy.

Pay down debt, establish good credit, go to school and learn a skilled trade, don't be a retard and spend it all. Invest some of that money toward retirement, set up a 401k, (NO NOT AN IRA) and leave at least 20 grand to sit in it while you go to school and work a part time job. The rest keep and spend as you need to for bills that arise. Be smart. profit.
