792003 No.792003 [Reply] [Original]

How should us uncivilized and underdeveloped cavemen invest? Is it even possible to invest in our puny market? Apparently if you want to trade overseas (lets say the US market) there is a tax if you exceed $80,000 nzd.

What the fuck. Its like were forced to live in mediocrity if you live in NewZealand.

Don't you guys just trade sheep?
Nothing wrong with a thriving sex market.

anon pls :(
(john key is making free trade agreements with some middle eastern country {I forgot where} so basically all our sheep is gone, we have nothing now but vegemite.)

How do I seriously consider investing in New Zealand, it seems like a big joke to me and im not in on it.

noobtier NZ investor here

Brought a rental property where rent covers mortgage (380k)

Invest in NZX smartshares (I got 50k in FNZ)

>> No.792520

>>792516
How much capital gains have you made since your investment with FNZ?
Do we have capital gains tax btw?

>> No.792530

I made an account on anz share and bond trading and bought vanguard shares in aus. I now have money in vts, veu, vaf, and fnz in nz. It sucks to invest here, and the property market is fucked, but we do the best with what we have.

>> No.792541

>>792516

I didnt put the whole 50k in at once so over the course of the last 12 months I have gained about 6%. If i did it all at once it would have been 12%

Dont you find investing in ETFs to be a waste of time, I mean paying people to manage a pretty much random portfolio that they pick by "specialists" anyway?

Surely if you took the time to pick your own stocks even a monkey could come out profitable

Not that guy, but one of my lecturers said that we do have a capital gains tax. He said that Inland revenue just doesn't enforce it (but will now start enforcing it in Auckland).

Holy shit a New Zealand friend.
My grand parents gave me $1000 out of nowhere and I want to get into investing, but I have no idea how any of it works in a practical sense.

>> No.792771

Im a noob myself this is what I can tell you:

The only share brokers that exist in NZ are banks themselves, there are no private firms like in other countries.
Trades cost roughly $30 to buy and to sell. So if you buy, purchase in a large bulk not in small increments otherwise youre wasting money via commission.

And now the bit where im stuck
>Finding a company to invest in

Also I managed to save ~$2000 from student allowances, I starved myself and survived off tendies and tap water. Trying to save up $5k for my first investment

If you've only got a grand then consider Harmoney P2P Loans.

Otherwise open a sharetading account with ANZ or ASB.

>> No.792798

Well I mean theres only so few shares you can buy in NZ that you know arent going to fail, these are utility companies like Energy companies, etc etc.

I dont know much, im just asking why ETFs are so good, it costs money for them to handle your money, when you could just buy x of every share from the NZX50 yourself

>> No.792800

>>792798
>what are transaction costs?

unless you're investing serious amounts of cash and have a great broker, ETFs are almost always going to be cheaper than creating your own market portfolio.

yeah you're right. infact that's exactly what the emh says. fund managers always underperform.

I think youre being sarcastic to me, but I cant tell im new to investing so im just asking questions, also even reading the first sentence about emh tells me that its nonsense (I think) seems like theres a lot of flaws with that hypothesis anyway

I'm not a Kiwi, but would they really notice if you make several different transfers below 80K?

Transfer that stuff to an online broker abroad. Trade as much as you like. If there are profits, take them home in increments.

Well it's consumer finance so there is inherent risk.

However you can minimise it by spreading your loan notes over many loans and by using some sense on who you loan money too.

I would not recommend using it as your main type of investment, however it is a fun way to diversify. Especially here in NZ with a overheated sharemarket.
