Well, I fucked up and lost my private key to my ETH account that was holding all my ICO tokens. Wiped computer with key, thought I had backup, drive with backup died and I tossed it to electronic recycling at work. I can go and ask if they still have it on Monday but chances are that it's completely gone. Lost 30k REQ and 8k AST and a bit over .1 of my ETH.

Trying to cope now, and it sucks badly, but just a question. If quantum computing ends up happening, will I be able to recover my stuff at some point? It seems as if that should be possible but it seems like a long shot. I assume that it would be possible to reverse just as long as there is a transaction using current encryption methods and you have the transaction hash and public key, right?

Its gone dude.

Why the hell didn't you write it down somewhere? If you're going to keep your ETH off-exchange, it's your own fault if you don't have a paper backup.

I don't think Quantum computing will be able to recover your private key. Even so, you're looking at 15 years minimum before quantum computers are powerful enough and commercially available.

When quantum computing becomes robust enough to break ECDSA, anyone with access to the computer will be able to transfer coins from any wallet anyway. Any coin that hasn't changed to a quantum resistant algorithm will plummet in value to 0

Yeah I only have myself to blame for it. At least I didn't lose multiple bitcoins like some people did, even losing 5 bitcoin is more than what I lost. Losing money still sucks though.

Hashimoto-Dagger doesn't seem to be doing anything that is quantum-resistant and is based on SHA-3, so it is technically possible even though yeah, you're realistic about the timeline. Probably will pass it onto my kids and grandkids for them to get as an inheritance if it happens.

Buy Mobius op sir.

>> No.7754369

You should have at least 3 backups, and one of them should be offsite or online
