I'm not sure exactly what kind of sorcery (futures, spreads, swaps) is involved in managing these funds day to day but I know that they have to be rebalanced daily and if the long and short funds somehow need to offset each other it might possibly, but probably unlikely, spell trouble for the long fund as well.
