How do I find gigs as a freelance web developer/designer? I have experience with Wordpress and I build a lot of personal projects on some other platforms as well. I don't have much luck with Craigslist though (relatively small city). And a lot of the really small businesses that don't have a site or have a really shitty template site don't realize that you need an *attractive* web presence, so part of my question is how do I convince people of that?

TL;DR: Help me get quick "make it rain" money!

If it's stuff you're able to do virtually, it doesn't matter what city you live in. Get on the Charlotte, NC Craigslist. I've seen a few webdev jobs on there lately.

If you can post an email or some way for people to get into contact with you, I'll cover North Carolina for you.

That's what /biz/rothers are for.

I'd be happy to do that/peruse other cities on Craigslist myself as well. My concern with that is how do I get paid? Set up a Paypal account and ask for money up front? That seems like it'd be a hard sell for some people.

Payment on completion. It's a publicly available website, they won't be able to use it if they haven't paid you.

i cold called local restaurants when i started off. as youve probably heard before, the clients will come to you once youve got a great enough network

Really all you can do is trust people to pay you what they owe. If you're able to deliver a quality end product you'll most likely get paid.

And I assume most jobs like this are virtual. I don't know much about tech though so it's kind of out of my realm. I was just trying to give general advice. I'm sure it would be better to do this sort of thing in person, but I don't see why a phone call/email couldn't get the necessary information across for something like this.

One of the web development posts I saw on Craigslist specifically wanted someone local but another one didn't specify.

Is there not a site/app that searches every city's Craigslist for keywords? If not, that should be your next product. I'll settle for 5% equity because I believe an idea like that could really take off.

Reddit might also be a good place to check out. It's more socially acceptable to browse reddit than 4chan so just by numbers alone there are going to be more people there to lead you in the right direction or even throw you some work directly.

Thanks for the insight. The other place I was curious about if anyone had experience with was odesk/elance? Basically just curious to see about personal experiences you may have had with it

Literally just cold call fucking every business.

Just google random industries or searches that people might make for in that industry like

"Low Minimum Salsa Co-packer" or "Custome printed secondary packaging"

Start a twitter, check out businesses, ones that have shit sites, message them and send them your portfolio

There is no reason for you not to be sending out 100 messages on twitter and facebook if you are actually serious
