the reason ethereum and ripple went straight up for months is because there was no competition. The market is much different now. The dynamics have evolved. People are always going to take profits and move into one of the dozens of other good coins that are primed for a pump. Back then, there was nothing else to buy. You just held eth and prayed.

In Q1 2017 ethereum was one of only a small handful of legitimate projects. To someone using coinbase/GDAX, it was the only thing to buy other than bitcoin.
