It really doesn't start until a significant portion of the population decides to store value in crypto.
Never mind the technological advances, lowering the barrier to entry with secure and user friendly wallets. We already know it's possible to have a global system of payment with low fees, even if centralized.
Take that one step further and now you're with the late comers.
My guess is that at some point in the next 5 years you'll have a decent way for payment with crypto in a large number of marketplaces.
That's the first step. When you see that it's the last chance to make any money in speculation.
