My broker allows commission-free purchases for all ETFs but also, for a select number, commission-free ETF selling as well.

Was wondering what your thought process is on which funds to buy, how do you pick and select from a list like this?
Should I just stick to S&P500? Which one? (Horizons S&P 500 Index C$ Hedged ETF, Powershares S&P 500 High Beta Cad Hedged Index ETF, BMO S&P 500 Hedged to CAD ETF) What about other US Equity funds? (Sorry, I am new to this)

And I was reading the terms of my broker regarding its free ETF and it gives a condition:
>the trade should not have an offsetting side (i.e. the existence of both a buy and a sell/short of the same ETF for any volume for the same day would disqualify the trade for this offering).
What does this mean, the 'offsetting side'?

Just go with a simple couch potato portfolio.

I'm up 15% since last year using a couch potato portfolio.

How much up are you since the beginning of February?

Down a little bit I think. The markets are volatile and a couch potato portfolio is still a great strategy.

Lucky you, I loaded in sometime in February and I'm down 1%, which really sucks because I could have made more with my money simply sitting is a stinking savings account.

What would really be hilarious is if this year turned out be a reversal of all trends and a downward decline wiping out my savings..

Why is the Canadian equity market so shit?

Same for the Canadian bond fund. They're holding me back.

One word... Canada

Yeah, way too reliant on energy and mining, both of which have been performing like shit in the last few years.

Which fund should I invest my next paycheque into? Is there value in Canadian stocks since they seem to be low right now?

Faggot, are you even trying?

Don't even bother looking at short term fluctuations. Check your account again in 20 years and you'll be happy.

Just decide your asset allocation and stick with it. Don't react based on market fluctuations.

Thanks, I've been looking at CPP for a while now. Unfortunately the Vanguard stocks listed in the model portfolio aren't listed there.

Also can you explain why he says to stick with index mutual funds instead of ETFs when:
you’re investing a relatively small sum (less than $50,000 or so)
you plan to make small, regular contributions
