I'm not going to do the math, but the average is in the triple digit percentiles, easily.

I recently created a little excel sheet because I was curious what would have happened if I had invested $1000 in every top 20 coin on Jan. 1 2017 and held for a year. I used the coinmarketcap historical snapshots on Jan. 1 2017 and Dec. 31 2017 to approximate. I think this is a pretty good approximation to the average return on crypto, similar to how people use the S&P 500 to approximate "the market".

Turns out you would have made over 1.2 million. An average return of x64 so this anon >>6151975 is quite close. There are several coins that went x100 or higher. The biggest winners being Ripple (x324), NEM (x254), Stellar (x130) and Lisk (x127). The only one that really would have fucked you over is E-dinar Coin (x0.02) but it hardly affects your results. Everything else went AT LEAST x8.

You could have x64 your money by simply throwing money at big market cap coins without even doing any research. Feels bad desu.

Meanwhile the total crypto market cap went from $18.028 billion to $584.407 billion which is about x32.

Note that the prices in the excel are up to more decimals than are shown btw because Excel doesn't show currency with more than two digits. Ripple on Jan. 1 for instance is actually $0.00654 but is shown as $0.01

Very interesting, thanks. So Ethereum was one of the highest performing despite already being a high cap coin.
