58254731 No.58254731 [Reply] [Original]

This general thread is for people that breed or grow exotic plants or animals for the purpose of sale to collectors.

Examples of exotics:
>reptiles
>bugs
>plants
>fish

These markets hold great potential for data savvy /biz/ posters, they are smaller and less "gamed", you can utilize data skills to forecast the value of your future hybrids or purebreds, and anticipate the market. Many "exotics" have a raw value if collectors aren't interested.

Bonsai plants, rare flowers, cool bugs, ball pythons, turtles, fish, these things all have really nice markets especially for someone with some knowledge of basic genetics.

SO many of these things can basically just be stored on shelves like anything else you collect.

No, but I’m seriously thinking about it. Not even exotic. This year I started all of my vegetable garden indoors from seed, using shelves with grow lights, and grew organically. For me it’s too cold outside to jumpstart seedlings for an early spring garden, so I used to buy a lot of starter plants, until last year the prices seemed unreasonable. Anyway, I went to Lowes to check prices on a couple of things that either did not germinate or I forgot to plant. If I had bought non-organic starter plants for my garden I would have spent about $400. They didn’t even carry organic. And just common houseplants were insane. Like $20 for a snake plant that was only one shoot and tiny. I’ve got the things reproducing all over the place. Hanging baskets of common petunias were $40. I started all of mine from seed for next to nothing. I saved a LOT of money this year, but it got me seriously considering starting a side plant nursery business.

You’ll have to look into your local laws. I’ve been toying with the idea of selling houseplants and also vegetable plants and herbs. Apparently in my area I have to obtain some sort of license and have a designated area/greenhouse that will be inspected. They claim it’s to avoid the spread of disease. I guess I can understand that. It’s kind of annoying though, as it puts me in the position of needing start up funds for the greenhouse and equipment and I’ve no idea if I’d be successful enough part time for all of that to be worth it. Ideally I’d just be selling extra houseplants I propagate and starter plants I grow on my little shelves with grow lights in a corner of a room, but da guvmint ain’t gonna let me do that.

Exotic breeders stand to profit more than trading card collectors and rare coin collectors, as well as 99.9999% of crypto traders and /smg/ will never make money

as well this has a way higher potential for big bucks than any "side hustle" would

therefore this is the only good thread on /biz/

you can fit like 100 snakes on a shelf and if they arent worth a lot of money you can literally sell them by weight and in bulk very easily, all you have to do is set up your operation so that the cost of operation is never beyond the base weight value of the snakes, this makes any rare snake a huge profit, expand this to any other type of breeding of cultivating

How many do you sell in a month? Unit price? Worth it? Would you consider moving to more expensive fish? Can you do tricks with the fish like you can with livestock in terms of raising them on very specific diets as well as selective breeding? Would a fish with a hyperdose of certain vitamins be a premium type of feed?

>> No.58267334

In my mind, I think about 300 units per month is a goldilocks zone, that's 10 sales per day. I have trouble imagining making more sales than this in any given region, to surpass this I believe you would need to move to ecommerce, where you would probably be dealing with vastly different pricing than local sales.

So the goal is to increase unit cost while maintaining roughly 300 unit sales per month. Once price begins to impact unit sales, you have maxed out this criteria and should begin to breed a different species.

I grow cacti as a hobby, picrel is my indoor setup. Some of them are exotic and fetch pretty high prices for healthy adult plants.
If you live somewhere with a ton of sun and have space cultivating them for sale is definitely an option. I've seen some crazy things like cultivated trichocereus varieties selling for 1000+ bucks per cutting.

I will likely simply sell some of my plants in the future to free up space - once they are large and presentable enough.

I've seen some really nice specimens of LW being sold for more than a grand. But they were immaculate and on their own roots.
You can graft cacti to kickstart their growth. A lot of slow growing cacti like LW tend to grow a taproot, and even after degrafting it takes years for a new one to grow.
A plant on their own roots fetches a higher price, since it takes a long time to cultivate, and it's harder to keep it free of disease and pests.

Then there's also the fact that peyote is illegal to grow in the US for most people. I wouldn't do it unless you live somewhere else. Focus on other expensive collector plants instead. Landrace tricho market is stupid in terms of money people pay for cuts. There are smaller cacti like astrophytum, ariocarpus and so on.

Very interesting. I am very interested in creating an ecosystem, of all rare creatures that have value. Rare fish, rare plants, rare birds, rare amphibians, rare reptiles, all in a greenhouse type ecosystem and they all work symbiotically. I think the operational costs can almost entirely be avoided if you match enough of nature's things together in the right ways. I think it would be super fun to have such a balanced and organized and beautiful thing, and it's quite the bonus that I would be able to harvest and produce rare things and creatures to sell as a result.

I have a small nursery on the side (>2000 trees) and my input costs per tree are approx $5 and they'll sell for $150+. You need to find the highest priced varieties and specimens because realistically the input costs don't vary much, just the required experience and time is also a big factor. My trees for example would sell now as is for $50 but another year of growth they're triple that. By the time they sell I'll probably have spent about 200 hours on them, plus the $10000 approx input costs and I'll be netting $300k
