Not sure what you mean by $100 in gold? The gold you will be buying is sold by weight. Usually ounces or fractions. Some gold is pure, some - like American gold eagles and krugerands - is alloyed with silver or copper. But the weight of gold content will still be an ounce or specified fraction.

$100 is not enough to buy gold without paying an unacceptable premium. If you want to buy precious metals and you only want to spend $100, buy silver. There are some really beautiful silver coins and rounds out there.

The premiums on junk silver have come down substantially compared to several years ago. So on that relative timeframe the price seems far more reasonable as if a massive influx of junk hit the market. I personally am buying exclusively junk silver to meet some goals and view 20x as my top and hope to get under 19x.
