I have around 600 shares of SOXL and I see that I could, for example, sell four 4/5 $44 contracts @ $2.50 and come away with about $1k in premium. At that point, I just hold to expiration and cross my fingers that SOXL stays below $44, right? And if it goes substantially lower than where it is now, I just buy the contracts back at a lower price? It feels like almost pure gambling but the idea of generating an extra grand for essentially doing nothing is enticing

you can do that before the expiry, or let it expire worthless and just make the full premium

if it goes over, and your cost basis is below 44, then you're still making money (the premium + the difference between curr price and 44 * shares), but you'll have your upside capped if it moons to 50 or whatever

the other aspect is that you are kinda forced to hold on to the shares. If you want to sell, you'll first have to buy back your call.
