You can run a company in negative for a bit but eventually you'll have to close shop if your costs are too high.
The argument was valid back then as it is now, scale now though is much larger and so are the costs to run.

The situation is different from 2017,as the miners require less resourcesand income to run in profit.
It is not different as they will go bankrupt if they don't make money from mining, and that line of zero profit is around 17-18k.
If miners die, someone will more money will buy them out and centralise them opening up a 51% attack vector.
