why not just call rolling what it really is... realizing the L and then opening a new position right away. Why would I lock in a $1500 loss and then immediately go and collect $300 on the new 10 delta position? Most of the time i have seen people try to roll and collect at least the $1500 again to recoup their loss. Hence they view the rolled position as a continuation of the original position and dont want to give the money back that they collected. You can't look at it like that. Change your perspective to: How much should I make. Find a % you need. Always take that much. I like to buy 10. Use 4 or 6 to make my baseline % needed (30-40% is what I like shoot for generallly). Then use the remaining 4 or 6 runners to sate my greed and hold the last couple for the really semitic range.

The 4 or 6 depends on dtes. If its sub 30dte always sell 6 at first target. Also always have boundary conditions; x price by y date. I usually plot a few slopes and if the underlyings trajectory deteriorates away then I will close the position and save my capital for the next play.
