Best as I can tell, the only intrinsic value/utility to a stock for retail investors is the dividends. Growth stocks derive their value from speculation of future value instead of their actual present value (dividends). Any price swing in a growth stock is caused entirely by greater fool theory in action. The closer to value (and dividend payments) and further from growth a stock is, the more "realized" the value of the asset is; it's not just speculation anymore. People want it because it prints money. Value stocks are taking a beating due to bond yields though, which I think is what's leading to more emphasis on growth.

I should mention the other utility of owning stocks is the possibility you might be able to use them as votes in a company regarding decision but that is irrelevant to 99.999% of retail buyers.

I should also bookend this by stating I've only been reading about the stock market for a few months.
