Ok biz whats the consesus on lying on your resume. Im a trained linguist for mandarin chinese with 12 years experience but i have no experience working as a translator. Agencies require things like needing 5 years experience but frequently these jobs end up going to some chink for the equivelent of $10 an hour then the work is sent to 'proof readers' in the fillipines. The chink has more experience than me, but in this industry the standard is to only translate into your own native language. I feel like i should be cleaning up this field but my honesty about my lack of experience is taking me nowhere. I just want make egregious lies. Say i worked for 5 years at some agency and give them a fake number to call for my job reference. Want to say I have all these qualifications and that I recieved some industry award. How much can I lie and get away with it? Do you have any stories?

Yeah but my question is more how far can I go with a lie? For instance howprobable is it that a prospective employer will actually contact one of my "references" where i sjpposedly worked for 5 years. Or that they'll actually bother checking some of my qualifications.

First, businesses lie about literally everything, so don’t feel bad about lying back. That said, if you’re going to lie, don’t lie about shit you genuinely don’t know or can’t learn in a short amount of time, and definitely don’t make some elaborate story up. Keep it short, sweet, and to the point. Were you some dingy floor manager at a grocery store? Wrong, you were in company logistics managing all the shit moving around with a nice fancy title (BIG emphasis on this, people love titles more than they love slop). Were you some dingus who only worked part time as a warehouse slave pushing and stacking boxes around? Wrong, you managed a whole crew. So on, so on. Obviously this doesn’t work if you don’t stay at a place longer than a few weeks, but I digress. If you lie you lie to pad yourself and make your appearance better, like makeup. But you don’t go overboard, because if you do you’ll fuck your face ugly and when you put it on you look like a clown, such as with makeup.

You can lie about job experience because you can specify on your resume to not contact your prior employer. Most people think little of this because frequently leaving a job is not always on the best of terms. Where you will fuck yourself is about education. If you claim to have an MA from X university they can call to request degree verification. So long as you know your field and can fly through an interview, and if you have solid references they can call you might be able to lie and get away with it.

what a joke. as someone who is natively bilingual in english and chinese (im white but grew up from birth in a chinese speaking place) my chinese is far far better than OPs and there simply are no decent paying jobs for "mandarin linguist" unless you are some kind of glownigger. and those all require american citizenship and pre existing security clearance. for everything else theres several million chinese people with good english who will do the job for a bowl of rice. the only other option is getting a job in a chinese company that requires a chinese speaking white face for bragging rights and those usually demand other actual hard skills. so if you plan to simply coast off of knowing chinese you are SOL

currently lying on my resume about having marketing experience and an associates in marketing. I kept it light, not much experience and only an AS deg, so hoping to find something entry level that doesn't do much due diligence and will get me proper xp. I just want a consistent salary, a job title and work uniform that carries some crumb of self respect, and work that isn't absolute brain dead slave tier shit. I feel like my brain is rotting working bottom of the barrel wagie jobs. I can't take another 4 years of slaving while getting kicked from every angle until I graduate with my completely unrelated stem BS degree

Lie as much as you feel you have to. It's not like its a criminal offence if you get caught. At least not as far as I'm aware. I'm not sure the exact historical/spiritual origins of it, but it's a HYPER status-and-beauty-obsessed country which features by-far the highest rate of plastic surgery in the world. The cultural exports they're now known for are also a deliberate contrivance (a "forced meme", if you will) pooomped by their government to boost GDP, rather than anything naturally-occurring.

I'm not even the anon that posited that claim and I don't know enough about their culture and history to tell, but they do have a pretty unique situation across the past 100 years or so, being so-rarely independent across history, geographically very constrained, the schism of the nation, and then their explosive population-and-economic-growth in an almost unprecedented span of time. You should lie on your resume. I come from IT, and I do that regularly, my colleagues do as well. Recruiters lie about the true requirements, so why shouldn't I lie about my experience? Of course don't just make shit up, you should only exaggerate about skills you already have. Once you pass any pre-job screenings, you know you'll be fine at the job
