Welcome to the Plebbit General, dedicated to the discussion of the world's leading decentralized P2P social media!

Plebbit is the only serverless, adminless, fully decentralized social network based on communities. It has multiple clients for different interfaces, like plebbitapp.eth.limo, a reddit alternative, or plebchan.eth.limo, a 4chan alternative.
Unlike federated networks, plebbit is fully peer-to-peer, anyone can create a community and nobody can censor it.
Unlike blockchain networks, every plebbit user is a full node and seeds all content which is text-only, media is embedded.

The plebbit token is used for governance of the plebbit DAO, tipping users, and avoid submitting captchas.

All code is open source on github.

I tried using your seedit client on Brave browser.
It took 7 seconds to load.
The captcha took 3 seconds to appear.
When I switched subs, it took 3 seconds to load.
Why would anyone put up with this slowness instead of quick federated communities?
Admittedly once loaded, switching between threads on the same sub was near instant and even quicker than Reddit.

federated and http isn't great, first of you need to run a public http endpoint, then you need to use regular DNS and https certificates, so DNS, certificate providers, and ISPs can censor you (they can't over p2p like ipfs), also federated sucks, your identity is usually on their server (like matrix username:matrix.org) so they can block your identity or even delete it completely, mastodon also blocks access to any instance that disagrees with their views, there's a reason almost so few people use activity pub, the federated model doesn't give you any more censorship resistance than a regular app. it's hard to set up an instance, and your instance can be censored by DNS and ISPs, and as the instance owner you are responsible for the account of each user and you can delete their accounts, it's an awful design.

the bluesky AT protocol seems a bit of an improvement it seems since it uses DID for identity so each user can store their own data and you can switch domain names, so your identity isn't owned by the instance owner, but even then I don't think it's that great, I don't see how they will deal with notification spam without having the ability to censor

email and IM (matrix) works well as federated because it's private, there's no incentive to block random private stuff, social media is different, you see everything and you're legally required to block stuff and also people will harass you if you dont block stuff they disagree with

For me the slowness is tolerable as I’m not looking for instant replies, but I can see how it can turn off some people. I think Plebbit would have gotten massive adoption back when the “pandemic” began. I remember that Reddit was nuking subs and censoring people who were anti-vaccine and sanitary conditions. I believe the same happened with Trump sympathizers in the aftermath of the election. Plebbit and its derivatives certainly have their place. Perhaps it’s not obvious at this time as mass censorship has slowed down, but in critical situations it’s essential. pic unrelated

Dev has literally been googling how to pull LP for 2 years, his wallet has been drained multiple times but he still insists on paying literal nigerians $2000 a week to code for him instead of just asking individuals for advice.

Seedit is pretty slow when running for the first time.
Its unlikely to get mass adopted if it continues to be so slow.

It is the trade off of decentralization. It's fast enough to be usable, but it won't be as snappy as apps running on centralized servers.
Still bullish on tech though
