beans are pretty pricey. the good coffee machines will set you back. you make good money in the morning rush but not enough to compete unless you own multiple locations and can buy and roast in bulk. one off indie coffee shops barely pay rent after payroll
t. own 2 coffee shops

For me, it's the McChicken. The best fast food sandwich. I even ask for extra McChicken sauce packets and the staff is so friendly and more than willing to oblige.

One time I asked for McChicken sauce packets and they gave me three. I said, "Wow, three for free!" and the nice friendly McDonald's worker laughed and said, "I'm going to call you 3-for-free!".

Now the staff greets me with "hey it's 3-for-free!" and ALWAYS give me three packets. It's such a fun and cool atmosphere at my local McDonald's restaurant, I go there at least 3 times a week for lunch and a large iced coffee with milk instead of cream, 1-2 times for breakfast on the weekend, and maybe once for dinner when I'm in a rush but want a great meal that is affordable, fast, and can match my daily nutritional needs.

I even dip my fries in McChicken sauce, it's delicious! What a great restaurant.

profit margin for coffee is at ~40% we sell our typical latte for 4 bucks, 7 for a pourover. most people get espresso drinks like a latte
(7 bucks for a starbucks is probably major cities)
its specialty coffee roasted nearby, much better than sbux
at that margin you just can't sell enough coffees to really make money
consider that we make our pastries in house priced 3-5 and our profit margin is 90%
food is around 70% but we charge 8-12 for a plate (toast, oat bowl w fruit etc)
so we make
most of the money we make is from food
every location we open we reduce our costs by buying more ingredients in bulk
need 5-6 shops in good locations to make good money

depends on the beans. not every batch is the same price. some are 30 a kilo. a shot of espresso uses up 16 grams, lets say 20 bc of waste and to make it a round number. thats 60 cents a shot.
then add milk,
which is notoriously high waste in espresso drinks (once you steam it you lose it)
and labor
probably labor is the biggest cost but even if the margins were higher you just cant sell enough quantity of coffee at a coffee shop to make massive amounts of profit.
youre not going to have a nonstop morning rush until you close. you need to sell more expensive stuff like food to make the rent you pay worth it.
every coffee shop i own would make 5-10x more as a bar

I'm just gonna come out and say it. Who gives a fuck? After a certain net worth the state of the economy only really affects you in so much as it moves the stock markets, and if you aren't at that net worth yet you should be 100% focused on getting your income to that net worth, not saving your ass to get there. What I'm saying is that a $7 coffee makes no difference at all and doesn't matter. It could be $25 and it still wouldn't make a difference.

I wanted to make my point without revealing my own net worth but I'm saying that the time people spend worrying about the price of coffee isn't even worth $2k per year.
I'm trying to say that I think people focus too much on saving and expenses instead of income. I buy virtually everything I want on impulse, within reason and with regard for my health, but still earn much more than I spend each month. People who complain about coffee prices would do well to focus on achieving the same thing.

If you get caffeine capsules with powder inside (not solid tablets), you can take a bit out each dose/day until you’re only taking a little, and then stop entirely. I did this for a bit, but I never fully stopped wanting caffeine because life is boring and caffeine makes it less boring. I love getting a good buzz and listening to music or exercising. Being off caffeine does make it easier to wake up though, and you’ll have more consistent energy levels through the afternoon and evening.
