I worked at a convenience store in N.C.
We opened at 5 am.
Someone always tried to rob us, between 5 am and 7 am, or close to dark, so they could get back on the highway and leave the scene.
They did allow us to open carry though, so my dad got to shoot one of the would be robbers, guy came at him with a machete, and then, when my dad shot him, went to the local hospital, and told them he "didn't know" how he got shot. For the next week or two, people came and tipped him, and took pictures with him...he was on local news.
His only regret was that he didn't have a larger caliber weapon with him, and that his gun jammed, before he could unload his 9 shots of .32 into the guy.
He went out and bought a 44 anaconda after that. I went with a Judge 410 / 45 LC.

Bums are a problem for these stores. They love setting up shop outside of convenience stores and hassling people for change. They'll even wait by cars for people to come out and ask them for money.

Depending on location and laws it will restrict what you can do, but you ideally want a strategy for mitigating the bum issue. Mainly, don't be near bus stops or public transit, and don't be near major hobo camps in your city. And be aggressive about chasing them off, which is much easier if you legally own everything around the entrance.
