Fun fact i learned not long ago : i don't live far from the oldest silver mine open to the public (a tiny portion only) in the world!

It was a mine exploited between the VII-IXth century, mainly under Charlemagne ruling.
There are 30km of galeries, which i find pretty insane considering how they were working, basically burning the galena with vertical wood faggots set ablaze for hours to scrap the rocky surface, since no tools back then were resistant enough to deal with the rocks. And zero ventilation but few chimneys. Must have been a real inferno to work within.

The fun thing is they didn't stop to exploit it because they couldn't find any more silver, but because they cut down all the trees within a 50km girth to burn down the rock and progress underground kek!
Considering the mines weren't very productive to begin with (4 tons of silver per year at best, 1 to 3gr per kilo of galena they could bring to the surface), it wasn't worth it to double the pain by being forced to also import the wood.

fire setting is one of the oldest mining techniques around. Pliny the Elder mentioned it, and it was indeed very likely invented in France. That's some great mining history!

we had the opposite problem, the ore was so rich and full of sulfur that if the mines caught fire the rock itself would burn for years. They had to be very careful not to set the pyrites and galena on fire. You'd kill off a hundred workers before anyone even knew what had happened.

Average life expectancy for a miner in my town was about 3 years. I'd guess it was even worse in your area. So many ways to die, and so little time to do it. Idk why, but reading your posts i've got a flashback from when i visited the Great Wall, and the locals called it the Longest Cemetary, because there was a 50% workers' death rate, and half a million died building it. And they all are buried beneath, used as dirt.

One of the crazy things about underground mining in the US in the 1800's was with the advent of dynamite a lot of times there was no body to recover. People would get blown up and just disappear. Turn into a red mist and float away with the smoke. A lot of times when that happened, the miners would just stop working that area out of respect or fear. Probably a fair amount of silver left in the ground because some dumbass drilled into a stick of dynamite that didn't go off during the previous shift.

My first job I made $5.50 which basically buys your nothing in today's money. Already today starting wages are $12-15+. It makes you wonder what prices will look like another 15-20 years down the line. Will teenagers be making $30? That is unlikely in my opinion due the the exponential nature of money creation. Every iteration of this will be more and more catastrophic and distortive of the money supply in order to maintain the status quo. I don't think they can keep the charade going. Yeah they are pretty rare and hard to find, price have been steadily climbing for those. I try to get my hands on one, but with my limited budget i risk to wait a while before the opportunity arise.
That said there is one auctioned on ebay from Germany who end up tomorrow, if the price is reasonable that could be my chance.

On top of that, i managed to secure a deal for a fantastic looking 6 Livres coin for only 300€, pic rel. They are very rare in that condition. I need to scrap by the monies before the end of next week though, i've been a bit too slurpy lately lol.

It was a joke, a textbook example of the Monte Carlo fallacy, and a criticism of the reasoning that "silver has underperformed for years, it's due to adjust upwards."

A more realistic analogy would be a rigged game where every time you put more money into the slot machine, the owner adjusts the odds of you winning down. However every time he lowers your odds, he has to increase the prize. So you keep dumping money in to get that win, and he keeps adjusting the slot machine to make a win less likely.

this would pay big eventually if you have unlimited cash and the owner has limited funds. But in reality the reverse is true since we have limited funds, and the people manipulating the machine are not only using our own funds to lower our odds of winning, but also borrowing money from other slot machine owners to guarantee we won't win.

As long as we're paying the slot machine owner to manipulate the machine, no amount of money is going to guarantee us a win.

if there's a hundred real ounces they produce a thousand paper ounces

if that hundred real ounces drops to ten, they just up the paper printing to ten thousand paper ounces.

as long as they have cash to print those pretend ounces, they can control the price indefinitely. And since they're also selling us their silver, they are getting all the cash they need from us. As well as cash from people that gamble on the price of the real and fake silver.

i found a very tiny local shop run out of a large house by a 60-something old guy, very friendly, cash only, part time buisness (only open 3 times a week for 6 hours) that has coins.

his main gig is sports cards, and sports collectable items, but he also has coins as a side thing to the sports cards. he seems semi knowledgeable, he has a couple of jars of junk silver a mix of canadian / u.s. quarters and dimes, a few war nickels, he doesn't price his stuff, he haggles a little, i bought a newfie penny off of him for 10 bucks to start things off last week he gets very few customers, and the ones that come in are for the sports stuff.

should i offer 2 bucks a dime, and 5 dollars a quarter for all of the junk silver? or ask his price first? what if he hits me something crazy like 1 dollar for each silver coin?

kinda nervous, i dont wanna sperg out on the old guy, he doesn't use a computer or anything to check on prices
