Actually the fiat in my bank account is accruing interest almost as high as T-bills, way above current inflation. Meanwhile bitcoin accrues zero interest, and is in fact somewhat inflationary now that mining rewards are still subsidized by new supply (gambling on price fluctuations aside). That's another reason Ethereum is better, at least if you hold that you can earn staking yield, while not even being inflationary either.

Actually every chain that isn't designed for smart contracts can never fulfill its proposed purpose of decentralization. That's because transactions never exist in a vacuum. You send money, you receive goods or services in return. If only one part of this trade, namely the money, is decentralized, there is no point. You still entirely rely on a centralized entity to fulfill their end of the deal, or you get nothing. Smart contracts, however, can solve this for many types of digital trades, by decentralizing the other part of the trade too and closing the loop, making the decentralization actually worth something.
