Does anyone else think GPUs are commodities? I browse boards like /v/ and /g/ and the average user cries about prices thinking they should be arbitrarily low like something that costs $300 or less for even a very high end card. When I buy a graphics card I imagine it almost like a store of value in my computer if it's a good one, I think the economy will worsen in the future so this makes sense that they will hold their value well, and there's no shame in buying a $700 graphics card if your net worth won't mind it.

This. I built my PC last december and it cost me $6k in total after buying a new GPU just 8 months after I got the first one (Radeon). Don't know what model it is, since it's sat in a closet right now, but it was amazing at playing games. The highest specs you could throw at it, and it consistently got 170+ fps.
The downside is that it can only do games and not the 3D render engines/Ai stuff I want to do, so it was a $900 piece of junk basically. Buy NVIDIA, it's a monopoly but whatever.
Since replacing it with a 4080, I can now run the Octane render engine and do photorealistic 3D models.

How could it be a commodity? Commodities don't become outdated and get replaced on a regular basis. It's more like buying a car. Maybe you'll get lucky and buy one that'll be super valuable years from now, but most likely it's gonna depreciate in value indefinitely.
