Dividends couldn't have been the deciding factor for any of those stocks during that time frame since there were other stocks then with much higher yields that have subsequently performed much worse. He bought based on something else. Also there were quite a few other stocks around then with no dividend that have vastly outperformed CAT, XOM, and DE. He either got lucky or did research into the fundamentals which is what I'm saying to do

I love good companies (I'm especially eyeballing PEP, WM, and ROL right now) but there's a smarter way to do this. If you buy and the price goes up you make money no matter what and that includes waiting a bit until it's back above some moving average or whatever other metric you prefer to confirm a trend. If you buy the dip and it goes up you make lots of money. If you wait for the uptrend to confirm and then buy you still make plenty of money. However if you just indiscriminately buy when it's going down and it keeps going down you lose money, possibly lots of money. Yes, there is a point. Thats why I usually buy DivDAX ETF when I want to long Germany, instead of DAX. It prevents me from owning shitcos like Wirecard that scammed their way into the DAX without being profitable.
