Election season approaching means we could well see some "tough on crime" posturing from whoever's in charge, as we often do, and when theft starts affecting the market (as it now is) the big boys must start to care. I'm undecided, but it seems like there MIGHT be a play for intrepid bargain-hunters. The bear case is that retail just goes the way of the dinosaur, web retailers continue to win, and USA continues the inexorable process of Brazilification. But I'm an optimist.

Overall I believe playing GDXU/GDXD outperforms JNUG/JDST (as long as there's a strong trend). But for shorter timeframe trades then they might be nearly equal.

If JNUG/JDST is concentrated on silver miners then it could outperform on certain days.

I love good companies (I'm especially eyeballing PEP, WM, and ROL right now) but there's a smarter way to do this. If you buy and the price goes up you make money no matter what and that includes waiting a bit until it's back above some moving average or whatever other metric you prefer to confirm a trend. If you buy the dip and it goes up you make lots of money. If you wait for the uptrend to confirm and then buy you still make plenty of money. However if you just indiscriminately buy when it's going down and it keeps going down you lose money, possibly lots of money. So my way you make almost as much when it goes your way and barely lose anything should you get stopped out. Your way you might make slightly more but if you guess wrong you get rekt. Think about it

Companies have a very easy fix for shoplifting, they just install real cameras and outsource all of the work to Target who has arguably the greatest loss prevention team of any retailer on the face of the planet and has actual detective and forensics work outsourced to them from police departments and other companies. They just send a police officer to your address to arrest you if it's felony theft, for misdemeanors it's a notice to appear in court and usually ends with a fine and some community service. The alternative is going all bladerunner and putting everything behind a plastic partition that has to be opened with a lock by an employee, but the few demo stores for that were built mostly as a warning for what could happen if people don't chill the fuck out.

Reverse Repo use has been going down since May-June. I believe that banks are accumulating bonds (corporate and US treasury) because the yields are high enough that they think they can wait out the bond market storm as long as they get a coupon each month.

But if I'm right and the full QT effect resumes next year then some other financial crisis could occur while the Fed keeps rates here. And god forbid if they hike it two or more times.

TLT should be in focus right now. This thing is positioning itself to drop under 80, but right now it can't. This pretty much always means one thing: there is some catastrophe brewing that is going to be the catalyst to slam this down. There is no way this won't go under 80, but there's also no way it will go under without something very major making everyone abandon all hope. It's just a question of what that major event will be. It's going to happen though.

It's funny. I've read Gayed's papers, listened to his lumber/gold/utilities shit so on and so forth. And I've researched a bunch of other strategies timing the markets with cash VIX ratios and all that. But at the end it all comes down to price. Most of those strategies are based on twiddling the numbers on some derivative so they inevitably reach a failure mode where the strategy tells you to go long something even though that thing is in a terminal down trend. A purely systematic strategy has to have an injection of common sense lest you end up in one of those algorithmic traps. Linda Raschke talks about this
