I think he swallowed their positions long ago, Bill Gates was 100% short and is hiding his position in a family desk, I suspect a lot of others are too. As the DMM for GME Citdel probably used some options fuckery and FTD's when smaller hedge funds closed out positions. I think the rise in prices to 300 > 170 was them unwinding various positions and then opening up a massive new one. This is why they never close, because as soon as they do enough to reduce FTD's they reopen them.

Something is going to be required for them to actually deal with it all. I suspect it will require a positive earnings with dividend of stock to cause them to start closing out properly.
