>Expensive kitchen remodel
>New cabinets, quartz island, lighting, backsplash.
>Almost 30k
>Paid $18k up front, paid the remaining 12k upon completion
>Contractor never deposited the second check, sent me an invoice marked "Paid in full" with $0 remaining.
>10 months later the money remains in my account.

Does this happen a lot? It wasn't a small business or anything-- medium sized. Banking error? I assumed it was going to get found out either at monthly reconciliation or maybe at the end of the season. Still, nothing. Obviously i'm just going to keep the money in my account, but check should have expired at 180 days. Chance I never have to pay this? Statute of limitations is 6 years in my state.

Leave the money in your account and say nothing. If they ever ask, just say that you're so rich that you didnt even notice lol

I would inform them of the error since I'm not a nigger, but it's possible they may never catch it and you'll be able to keep the money.

just leave the money there for 6 years.

I never got charged for an Xbox I bought from GameStop. They did an authorization charge and then just nothing ever again. It's like a little personal lottery when it does happen, I guess.

>tell them
>never cashed $30k check
No good deed goes unpunished. They either still won't collect in which case op has the same dilemma
Or worst case their nigger brain problems somehow become ops problems
>sheit my baby mamy took the check
>write 2nd check
>both get cashed
>op out $60k
I'd just forget about it desu. Let it be a 30k padding in your account for the next 6 years.

I don't know about a lot but it happens. Heard a story about this guy buying a trailer to help haul shit. Paid for it in full year later still hadn't bothered to go get it. Then just didn't. They just got so busy working and a year had passed. They weren't rich or anything either. This guy is probably way too busy to keep his shit straight and doing it all himself. Needs a real accountant to manage his books. You aren't really doing anything wrong. I scammed Amazon on accident. I had faulty product so I ordered a new one. When the new one came I sent the old one back in the new box. They refunded me the price of the new item and it costs $250 more than the old. I made $250 and wasn't even trying to scam them.

This reminds me of the time the checkout lady at the grocery store only charged me for one Mott's applesauce cup when it was actually a 3-pack.

You'll probably get an invoice in early 2024 when they start to do 23 numbers.

I'd suggest asking a lawyer and not the pajeet shitcoin board.
But really just do as anons said and leave enough to cover it in your account until such a time you can legally say "not my problem".

I pulled out $100 in 20s from the atm and one of the bills was itself a $100 bill, so I made $80 by pulling some cash out. Went back to the business and told them I did it like months later just for lols it was some weed shop so idgaf

The weed shop has nothing to do with the ATM retard the bank owns it.

If he did a good job, the honorable thing would be to tell them you're balancing your checkbook, and noticed they hadn't cashed the check
Put the ball in their court and your also won't feel like a piece of shit

>> No.56137829

>>56137528
The ball was in their court as soon as they walked away with OP's certified cheque. The ball is still in their court because they haven't followed up. Are we all supposed to pretend like we wouldn't have to waste 8 hours talking to people and begging for our money back had it been the company that had shortchanged the customer? And when the business shortchanges itself, it's still the customer who must use precious time to rectify it on their behalf? Logically speaking, fuck that noise.

Yes contractors are retarded but you have the responsibility to pay them back because they can seek out a mechanics lean against your assets down the line, it is best to clear it up to avoid liability especially if you have the money

You're both retarded. That is a private ATM that some poor bastard operates trying to break even on the fees. You basically stole 80 from an anon.

>> No.56137886

They marked it payed in full. Their accounting department needs auditing, not OPs bank account. Retards

>> No.56137939

I'd just leave the money in the bank account and do and say nothing. If it's not caught on end of the year statements it's highly unlikely you'll ever get charged the remainder.

Morality wise I'm kind of torn. If it was a good deal and a small business I'd feel obligated to pay it. House shit has gone up like 2-400% in the last 4 years so obviously they're rolling in profits. 1 day 16 man hour jobs are getting billed at 3-5000 around here. Likely what happened is they marked the whole job as 18k and not 30 and that's how this happened in the first place.

Checks in the US expire after 6 months.

With that said, the contractor could contact you later and ask for it. As long as he notifies you within a certain amount of time, I assume that you would still be obligated to pay for services rendered. If you refuse, he could probably try his luck in court. I think he would have a good chance of having the case decided in his favor unless you have some transactional record from your bank or credit card company showing that you paid.

During the initial covid lockdown i ordered a sick deal from office max. Led lights, wireless charging pad, second shelf for my monitor

Because the country was going crazy, somehow the order said it shipped to a different state. I called and asked for a refund. The next day the desk arrives on my front porch, and the refund completes.
It's like that time someone posted on /v the dickies store was glitched, and i purchased $300 of snow shoveling gear for $5. That one felt good
