They're just raw short positions, they don't expire. Counterparties of a swap essentially offer a synthetic position, they then hedge the synthetic position's exposure with a real position. So if Archegos wanted to short a stock then the counterparty gives them a synthetic short and hedges it with a real short to become neutral.
