Never be ashamed for being American, coming from bongland my first experience of your national parks was like a religious experience for me, a truly wild space. There is barely an acre of land in the UK that hasn't been radically changed for human use, even if it's rural and pleasant looking.
There isn't much approaching even one of your national parks in the whole country.
