Is starting a small factory a good idea or realistic in America? my cousin runs machines in his garage to print and embroider shirts. I was thinking about what kinds of other products you could manufacture with a few machines in the space of a garage. stuff like special tools and auto parts seem like a big demand.

I suspect the regs, licensing and kickbacks will murder you. I wish it was viable, but there's a reason everyone is outsourcing their production to the third world. The West isn't really competitive when it comes to manufacturing, despite massively higher productivity per capita. There's just too much bullshit to deal with, too many leeches to pay off.

No, you outsource that shit to China just like your competitors or you'll be btfo

That said, all that really means is you can't do it the way it was always done. If you can cut costs to a minimum, get a really good edge, find the proper niche, you might have a chance. It won't be easy, you;re talking about producing mostly one-offs, from what I see. A nightmare to budget, and to price, frankly.

if you talk about etsy store levels of demand surely or highly customized / specialized widgets. otherwise it's easier and cheaper to design and manufacture overseas. Auto parts are often patented by the OEM

China isn't the place to have your slave labor outsourced anymore. The place to be are the Tigers and India

Unironically the only way I see you making money in a small space in america with a small to medium sized capital investment is ..... Aquatic farming, breeding, etc. be it plants or animals. You can then either sell it to collectors, chefs, pets shops etc. But you actually need to have some sort of autism and enjoyment for it otherwise ROI is too low imo.

Dont ask me how to start.
