For the past few days (especially) we have had five different faggots argue with me saying
>DURRR REPAYMENT DOESN'T MATTER
>DURRR MARKET DOESN'T CARE
>DURRR US WILL JUST PRINT MONEY AND PAY OFF DEBT!!
>DURRR DEBT TO GDP DOESN'T MATTER!!
This is what happens. You see what happens? This is because of you. They downgraded US credit rating, due to your hubris over the past few days. You deserve this, faggots.
https://www.forexlive.com/news/fitch-downgrades-usa-long-term-credit-rating-to-aa-from-aaa-20230801/
>This is huge and follows S&P downgrading the USA on August 5, 2011. The last episode sparked a major risk-off turn (and even got its own wikipedia page) and this one is likely to do the same, if not worse because now two-out-of-three of the US credit rating agencies have the US at sub-AAA.
>Here's what happened last time, according to that entry:
>Global stock markets declined on August 8, 2011, following the announcement. All three major US stock indexes declined between five and seven percent in one day. However, U.S. treasury bonds, which had been the subject of the downgrade, actually rose in price and the dollar gained in value against the euro and the British pound, indicating a general flight to safe assets amid concerns about a European debt crisis.

I am new to stock stuff. What I am having a hard time understanding is what exactly is a stock doing once you have purchased it? In my head, the only reason you would buy stocks is to use the dividends and if a stock doesn't give dividends, then what is the point? As an experiment, in 2020, I invested 1000 USD on Robin hood, I bought a few stocks and 2 stocks of that SPDR ETF 500 thing. At that time, my portfolio thing was like 1000 USD and then today it is 1500 USD. That is without me adding more money and using the dividend stuff to buy small stocks here and there. I guess what I am confused about is how do people become "wealthy" off stocks given that some stocks have such low dividends and require that you have many of them to even equal what you might make in a regular job in a week? I don't understand what to do with stocks that have no dividend. Or low dividend.

Stocks will keep going up at least until they start going down again.
We will know for sure when that happens because price changes will switch from an upward direction to a downward one.
The main indicator that we can use to identify this switch is that we will start to see stock prices falling instead of rising.
That will tell us when returns on stocks have begun changing from positive to negative. With negative returns, that means that stock values will be shrinking rather than growing.
Thus, the prices at which stocks are bought and sold will be going down instead of going up. In fact, if a stock's price is changing, then that means it is either falling or rising.

First, think not in terms of the dollars you gained, but the percent. You got 50% over 3 years! Peanuts compared to the gorilla nigger options gamblers here, but for doing fuck all that's nice. The main appeal, at least for me, is having a super liquid asset with greater stability than something like crypto. Furthermore, it's been beat into peoples heads for generations stocks make you money, which makes it a self fulfilling prophecy. Ultimately, it's not the best or only asset out there, but for someone who has regular quality income and is a lazy shit like me, it's a great place to shovel money.

Just figure when you buy a stock you buy in as a percentage of that company. if its paying dividends you get a part of that and the company. If its growing you get a part of that too and the shares reflect a higher valued company because its growing so much.

You got it all wrong. Joe Biden himself currently owns 30,000 child slaves who work on his massive Congolese chocolate plantation. Agree with >>55726750, options and crypto very much are gambling for the most part. There's something to be said about using options to hedge the risk in positions where you own or are short the underlying. Ignore the short term thinkers and people who talk about stocks as if they're pieces of paper, they are partial ownership stakes of businesses and should be analyzed as such. When you find a business selling for less than you think it's worth that is an investment. Anything else is speculation, and for people who prefer to do that best of luck to them.

conshitter the following:
On June 1st the VIX closed below 17 and has been closing below 17 ever since.
The past three dividends JEPI paid were
>Jun $0.365
>Jul $0.359
>Aug $0.29
That's $1.014 in total for three (two, inactuality) months the VIX was below 17.
Multiply those $1.014 by 4 and if low VIX is indicative for a low JEPI dividend and markets stay calm in the future then you'll notice JEPI isn't paying out THAT MUCH and it's share price isn't appreciating THAT MUCH compared to the index itself.
idk... I throught for a while those things might be a good deal but low VIX seems to be kryptonite.

Cut from the same cloth, Lynch wrote the foreword to the Warren Buffett Way by Hagstrom. Buffett has spoken admirably of Lynch on several occasions. Where I think they differ most is in position sizing, Lynch's desire to not miss the 10- or 100-baggers, along with practical needs for liquidity running a mutual fund, was what had him having thousands of small positions at Magellan and a few large ones vs Buffett's approach of significant concentration. Lynch's thought being that having even a small stake in various businesses would keep him motivated enough to keep up on their developments. Walter Schloss, another legend, operated the same way as Lynch in this manner

If you held it over the year could be closer to 8ish but the main thing is its dropping quite a bit from the earlier 60 cents payouts of this year. It should still be able to generate the right payouts in any market. Unless the fund manager is messing up.

>What I am having a hard time understanding is what exactly is a stock doing once you have purchased it?
A stock represents a small portion of a company. The value goes up or down depending on how valuable people think the company is.

>I guess what I am confused about is how do people become "wealthy" off stocks given that some stocks have such low dividends and require that you have many of them to even equal what you might make in a regular job in a week?
People who get rich with stocks started investing early, regularly put large amounts of their money into a diverse portfolio, and left it there. Years later, they can sell the stock and end up with a lot more money than what they started with.
The majority of investors make most of their money by working a job. Realistically, you need several million dollars worth of investments to get an average income from just the dividends or returns.

Just save as much money as you reasonably can now and put it into a fund that tracks the market as a whole like VOO, VOOG, SPY, etc.

>My friend explained it to me that money in the bank is doing nothing while money on the market is at least growing even though its volatile.
Your friend is right.
>Is the typical person buying stock when its low, the stock climbs and then they sell it?
The typical investor is a monkey with a robinhood account. 90% of investors underperform the market by trying to make money off short-term trades. Don't worry about this until you have more experience in the market.

>>55726668
$1500 in stock ISN'T the same as $1500 in the bank. The money in the bank loses value over time, but the money in the stock market increases its value over time. It costs you in the short-term, but pays big in the long-term. That's the point of investing.
