I am new to stock stuff. What I am having a hard time understanding is what exactly is a stock doing once you have purchased it? In my head, the only reason you would buy stocks is to use the dividends and if a stock doesn't give dividends, then what is the point? As an experiment, in 2020, I invested 1000 USD on Robin hood, I bought a few stocks and 2 stocks of that SPDR ETF 500 thing. At that time, my portfolio thing was like 1000 USD and then today it is 1500 USD. That is without me adding more money and using the dividend stuff to buy small stocks here and there. I guess what I am confused about is how do people become "wealthy" off stocks given that some stocks have such low dividends and require that you have many of them to even equal what you might make in a regular job in a week? I don't understand what to do with stocks that have no dividend. Or low dividend.

Stocks will keep going up at least until they start going down again.
We will know for sure when that happens because price changes will switch from an upward direction to a downward one.
The main indicator that we can use to identify this switch is that we will start to see stock prices falling instead of rising.
That will tell us when returns on stocks have begun changing from positive to negative. With negative returns, that means that stock values will be shrinking rather than growing.
Thus, the prices at which stocks are bought and sold will be going down instead of going up. In fact, if a stock's price is changing, then that means it is either falling or rising.

The main appeal, at least for me, is having a super liquid asset with greater stability than something like crypto. Derivates are more of a gamble than crypto imo because of time factor.

A stock represents a small portion of a company. The value goes up or down depending on how valuable people think the company is.

People who get rich with stocks started investing early, regularly put large amounts of their money into a diverse portfolio, and left it there. Years later, they can sell the stock and end up with a lot more money than what they started with.
The majority of investors make most of their money by working a job. Realistically, you need several million dollars worth of investments to get an average income from just the dividends or returns.

Just save as much money as you reasonably can now and put it into a fund that tracks the market as a whole like VOO, VOOG, SPY, etc.
