You're exactly right, the tech mattered when it was new. Now that ETH is established, none of the "new tech" is meaningful enough to drag away the users. Maybe someday something big enough will come out, but it's hard to imagine ETH being replaced anytime soon. It's a good point that it's not only tech that matters but fundamentals in general, and entrenched users is part of that.
