Does it cost them money to prop up the price of an asset during the plateau of a BART?

After they've pumped the price to a certain level, they maintain that level through wash trades, profiting off midwits who jump into their wash trades. But does it cost money to maintain the price, or could they in theory maintain that level indefinitely?
