Daily reminder that finance is pseudoscientific make believe garbage and capitalism is inherently unstable, exploitative and unsustainable with a built in expiration date. Ever escalating recessions, poverty, debt, wealth inequality, monopolies, worsening labor conditions, disease, pollution, exploitation, slavery, conflict and wars are fundamental, necessary and intended principles of it, NOT glitches. Greed, selfishness, lying, cheating, stealing, competition, conflict, slavery and war and overall evilmaxxing are behaviors highly encouraged and incentivized under capitalism. It is LITERALLY cancer and i dont mean it metaphorically, i mean it literally, it shares the exact same functions and principles as a cancer cell.

Unless every single financier parasite, banker and trader is euthanized and every stock market and bank is burned to the ground, and the status quo completely abolished, the biosphere and all life will extinguished

So why is smg not interested in meme stocks?

I remember buying $20 leap calls on gme back when it was under $2 because of this thread.

Then I just sold them like an idiot when they were nearly in the money because I thought meme stock people were retarded redditors. They are but I shouldn't have dismissed them without considering whether they were actually having their broken clock moment.

It seems like that's the constant theme I see regarding meme stocks in their individual threads, which makes me think most smg doesn't follow them.

>US initial jobless claims 261K vs 235K estimate
>For the week ending June 3, the seasonally adjusted initial claims stood at 261,000, an increase of 28,000 from the previous week's revised level of 233,000. This is the highest level of initial claims since October 30, 2021, when it was 264,000.
>Yields have moved lower with the 2 year now down 4.4 basis points at 4.508%. The 10 year is down 0.4 basis points to 3.779%
>The expectations for a June rate hike is now at 25% which is lower from earlier levels of about 31%.
Higher than expected = green day
We are still in the dynamic of bad news = good news
Good news = bad news
Good economic news = growth expectations higher = inflation expectations higher = tighter monetary policy = yields go up = bearish
Bad economic news = growth expectations lower = inflation expectations lower = looser monetary policy = yields go down = bullish
261K is a "bad" number, where it indicates economic weakness
It's threshold, don't get me wrong, it's not like 400K level of bad, but above 250K you're starting to get into troubled water
If the economy is on weak footing = less aggressive monetary policy, more likely to cut in the future
If we keep getting positive economic news, it is unironically extremely bearish, as it means more mass/systemic bank failures
If interest rates keep going up = bank failures = contagion risk = massive economic downturn

Not true - anything that makes yields go up = bearish
It is (one of the reasons, other than rotation) that we dumped yesterday, 2 year and 10yr yield (and whole yield curve) was rising sharply, 10 basis points in a single day move
Good economic news is still bearish, and results in higher probability of rate increases
quote
>The expectations for a June rate hike is now at 25% which is lower from earlier levels of about 31%.
this is what matters - good economic news affects this
the market still believes, still understands that if rates keep going up, things are going to go boom - either through catastrophic systemic bank failure, or an extreme tightening of lending conditions / failure to expand credit

>Yields have been going up non-stop recently.
Yes - higher growth expectations
Yields going up due to higher growth expectations is normal, and market participants can still be buying stocks while yields are going up, if they are expecting more growth
However if it is too strong of growth, too hot of an economy, like we saw in the jobs last Friday, then it drives expectations of further rate increases higher
>I can't think of any recent good data where it didn't
the dynamic has been "no landing" - if you expect a "no landing" higher yields is okay - it works, until it doesn't; then suddenly the higher yields become very bearish - if the expectations do not match reality
then valuations come down, as higher yields affects valuation models, specifically future cash flow values
>which the market now interprets as bullish
No - if it is just those banks, it is bullish, as it means Fed will be less likely to be aggressive in monetary policy; if it's all banks (which it is, all regional banks are underwater with millions and millions of toxic assets both their bonds as well as their commercial real estate which is valued ~50% less) then it is extremely bearish
It is why you have heard over and over
>market is pricing in Fed cuts, because they think "something is going to break"
higher yields = even more underwater banks = more bank failures on a mass scale

Yes, but right now the stock market doesn't care because it believes AI will produce infinite growth and lower expenses
>if it's all banks
That's even more bullish because then the Fed will pivot back to ZIRP. It doesn't matter if it'll be bearish in the moment because the anticipation of it is still bullish. Also we know that JPMorgan will just buy up all the failing banks with the blessing of the US government

>Even if it won't really happen that way, this is the current market narrative.
I agree with you that this is what the market thinks is going to happen - but I believe the market is underestimating how bad the balance sheets of al the banks really are, that they are not only getting fucked by the inverted yield curve / their poor loan spreads, but they are also getting butt fucked by commercial real estate now being worth literally 50% less due to WFH, butt fucked by the rise (which will keep rising) of delinquencies and defaults on all loans (student loans / credit card / auto / mortgages) -- which will only get worse after August student loan repayment resumes

Amazon 3% on what? You can't tell me this market randomly picks some stocks out and pumps them and dumps others that are part of the indices. What is really being bought or sold are the indices. The stocks move along to make the index move in the wanted direction. For this the algos buy any fuckin random stocks and sell others.

Is there some benefit to keeping large sell orders open for a while to give these dealers some time to contemplate whether to come take my order or not? >When I buy to open am I creating new contracts out of nothing?
Very circumstantial and most of the time there is no clear way of telling.
However, one circumstance that is a guarantee that your trading partner is "writing" a contract and not selling an existing one to you is when your expiry and strike price has zero volume AND zero open interest before you made the trade.
If there is open interest and or volume on your expiry and strike price, there is no clear way of telling.
>when I sell to close those contracts am I selling them back to the same person?
>Or did I just dump off a bunch of contracts onto someone else?
Both are possible, but again no clear way of telling.
Your broker does not tell you who is your trading partner.
>Are those contracts still floating around somewhere on someone's books?
>Or are they closed out now because I sold them back to the same person?
Also very circumstantial and no clear way of telling.
However.
If your trade was the only volume of the day on a specific expiry and strike price AND it's being reported that the open interest was reduced that day by exactly the volume you've been trading, then yes those contracts you traded did "evaporate."

i noticed this when I was playing around with selling covered calls on managed blackrock etfs that i was the only open interest on.
>Your broker does not tell you who is your trading partner.
so in my example I dumped off a bunch of SPY 429 puts expiring today at 1.35 per contract which was a very very small profit for me. Now depending on who I sold them to it could either be a very very small loss for them if I sold them back to the same person, or someone is now bagholding 429 puts for a $0.50 loss right now. The market "came to me" and filled my open order that I had out there for a while. I typically don't leave sell orders open unless I'm going to make sure the trade goes through right then and there. But did someone look at that open sell order that I had out there for 30 mins and decided to move the underlying to come take those contracts? I'm just trying to grasp what actually happened there.
