I still barely understand what a block chain is. I’ve watched YouTube videos but I forget the tech details the next day. Is it basically just a distributed database not centralized on cloud servers?

Am I somewhat correct that blockchains are basically just distributed networks/database type of things that are decentralized opposed to centralized services by someone like aws spread all over the world via computers and they encrypt shit which miners get paid in coins for solving the encryption algorithm type of thing? Smart contracts are basically just “if X happens by this party then Y will be executed.” And basically just verifies that?

Yes, but the irony is that most of these networks literally life on AWS as they don't have a large enough community of people that are actually interested in decentralization. Most projects have two groups: The insider and VC group that runs the tech in the cloud and has massive amounts of coins and XX-cloud instances and then there is the low involvement nigger cattle group that just buys a few of these coins on exchanges here and there.
