wtf. It's a catch-22. You need job experience to get the job, but you need the job to get that job experience in the first place. If no one gives you your first job you can't get your foot in the door.

I've been in IT for 15 years now, and in the past few years I have been put in charge of managing paid interns; I don't hire/fire them, but I'm responsible for training them and assigning them work. Almost none of them come in with any experience. It blows my fucking tits off when one of them comes in and knows how to make a network cable or something.

They just hired a new Network Administrator at my place, the guy's IT experience is that he set up the livestream at his church. That's AV. Not even really IT, let alone networking.

So the positions are out there, and they are actually hiring people with almost zero ability. get a few pet projects under your belt. Make a website for the local church/youth group/boy scout troop/community center. Maybe set up a test network at home and configure active directory and group policy. You can put non-work related experience on your resume, so find a couple projects that interest you and that would look good on a resume.

You can do it. With all the talentless chodes they have hired at my place, I'm sure you'll be able to get your foot in the door. Good luck, and don't give up.

55172238

I can explain some of the job application bullshit for you guys.

I hire part time freelancers for my brother's small business, but I assume my experience of hiring translates pretty well to larger companies.

The reason you apply to 100 job listings and only get 2 replies is because of a few factors.

The 1st reason you don't get a response is there is a huge number of job applicants. It would literally take me hours to send messages to them all saying "I'm not going to hire you" and not benefit me at all. It would take me 10x as long to send customized messages explaining why I'm not hiring them. So, why would I spend my time doing that for no benefit? I just ghost the non-hires instead.

Another reason I don't tell them "I'm not hiring you" is because I may want to come back later and hire the #2 best applicant if the #1 guy doesn't work out. Although, usually in those cases I just post a new job listing later.

When I'm hiring, the #1 thing I look for is that the person has done the exact work type before. So, for example, if I'm hiring a graphical artist to make display content for Amazon.com, then the applicants who say "I have 2 years of experience making graphics for Amazon" go right to the top. And the ones who have portfolios showing their work, and it's high quality, are the ones who ultimately get hired.

People with no relevant experience or portfolio go to the instant rejection pile, except in very rare circumstances where no applicant has experience doing the job before (this only happens with very niche work. Recently I had to hire somebody to make a video ad for Amazon. Literally 0 of the applicants had done it before, so I hired somebody who had made Youtube ads instead).

To be continued...

>> No.55172265

So imagine I post a job for a graphical artist to make a certain type of content for Amazon. I get 60 applications. Out of those, 30 of them are just bad applications. They probably could do the job, but they didn't tailor their application to my specific job listing at all. They are graphical artists but their application doesn't say anything about working with Amazon, or the type of graphics that I need. So their application gets instantly rejected.

Of the remaining 30, 20 of them have worked on graphics similar to what I need before. Some of them even have decent portfolios. But they haven't worked on Amazon graphics before. So they go in the "maybe, but probably not" hiring pile.

Of the last 10, they have all worked on the type of content I need before. They all have portfolios. Now I go through their portfolios, carefully looking at the work they have done, to see if it is any good. I find 3 people who have top tier work that is exactly what I'm looking for.

Of those 3 people, typically the person who bid the lowest price wins.

The tldr of all this is: Your application needs to hit the sweet spot of "exactly what I'm looking for" plus "the lowest price available" to win a job application. Employers only pay more if they have to, and they only hire people with no experience if no other experienced candidates at a reasonable price are available.

I stopped trying to find agency work in marketing a few months ago. Decided I just don't have it in me anymore to jump through the hoops.

>get messaged on linkedin by someone that works at an agency
>feel flattered that I've been approached
>have 40 min chat with someone from the company that goes well
>end of call tells me I'll need to do a task and also come in and do a presentation based on whatever I want

Told them I wasn't interested from that point on and best of lucking finding who they're looking for. The woman I spoke to also mentioned how 'we get to go home at 3pm on Fridays' and it sounded like the most pathetic 'win'.

I'm currently working freelance and just about covering food and rent costs. It sucks but at least I have the potential to grow in what I'm doing and learn new skills on my own terms. I simply refuse to suck up or jump through hoops anymore. Simply ain't worth it.

I know. But the only thing I genuinely enjoy doing every day is physics, and it's a weird small group getting PhDs there that all have wildly different experiences in the job market.
Some end up with a cushy position at a national lab or a uni, some end up getting headhunted by finance firms when their specific types of analysis are suddenly popular, some end up having to work retail and drowning in debt the rest of their lives, and it all just depends on how popular your specific sub-field is going to be a decade after you pick it out to start. It's a massive gamble.

speaking from the other side of the table in a non-software STEM industry. skills/roles are so segmented that it's hard to find someone with experience specific to what you're doing. true new grads you can roll the dice on because you expect to train them, but it's a PITA to hire an "experienced" hire at an experienced hire price and basically have to train them the same. some people are flexible enough to apply skills from their old role quickly but that's hard to gauge in an interview session.

Best advice I can give is to stay up to date on your technical skills. review the fundamentals you learned in college so you can at least pass the basic technical questions. then, if you get an interview at a company, review the products they make to get an idea of what you'd be doing. It's definitely a competitive market, but people who actually know what they're doing are still in short supply in my opinion.

Pretty sure I've heard people saying that literally all my life but then when you actually apply you notice that it's clearly not true, there's plenty of people applying for each open position. Of course companies would always want more workers to choose from since they wouldn't have to pay as much but there's no real "desperation" anywhere.

> It's a catch-22. You need job experience to get the job, but you need the job to get that job experience in the first place. If no one gives you your first job you can't get your foot in the door.
Pretty much. It's obvious that it's a stupid way of hiring people but companies still do it. Having a degree in the field should be enough for an entry level job but it's clearly not in tech at least.

Imagine if when applying to university they'd require you to have 5+ years of experience of studying in a university. Everyone can see that this would be a stupid requirement to set but when it comes to jobs people somehow don't see it lmao. I wonder how universities figured this out but companies didn't? Is it just lower IQs in the business world than in academia or what?

>I wonder how universities figured this out but companies didn't? Is it just lower IQs in the business world than in academia or what?
because universities make money off of people, and want to let people in. The job market is kept competitive intentionally, so you always have a pool of people desperate for work. When a company can choose between someone who has demonstrated they can do the work, why waste time training someone that might not be able to last? And employers know that college doesn't really prepare you for the working world in many ways. Most jobs barely utilize what you learned in college at all. Honestly the whole system is just bullshit.

I guess that would make sense if you didn't constantly hear from companies saying they want to hire more qualified people but then they measure whether you qualify or not based on your experience and they don't want to give you the experience if you don't already have the experience lmao.
>And employers know that college doesn't really prepare you for the working world in many ways. Most jobs barely utilize what you learned in college at all.
Is it the same in medicine? law? Doesn't seem like it is. Why? It seems to me people in the tech field are particularly retarded about this but then again that's the only field I have any experience with. At this point I really regret picking CS as my major lmao but I was young and somehow fell for the "just learn to code bro" meme.

people going into careers that have prerequisites for using expensive equipment with lots of risk involved in mishandling it like surgeons are the only people who need actual education, because they need to train on expensive equipment that is best done by having educators teaching in a group setting with pooled money.

Math can be learned and taught with zero investment, the law can be learned and taught with zero investment, 90% of the workforce could be taught their entire skill set on a laptop and in low risk entry level positions.
