Worth noting that the actual payout is pretty insignificant on these. Yield doesn't mean as much over a shorter timeframe.
Think about if they yielded 50%, for example. It'd still only be less than 5 cents off par. So if 50% yield equates to less than 5% perceived risk, what does this 1% premium mean?

Well as I'm sure you're aware he said either we default now or default later. Unfortunately for us, this is one more situation where Trump is right.

So we wipe out Social Security's trust fund (immediately balancing the books there means a ~25% benefits cut), zero out foreign bondholders, and maybe do a 50% haircut on retail bondholders. That pisses off the world and Boomers, creates a bit of economic damage, and tacks on a few % to our bond yields, but probably no hyperinflation and we don't have to make any politically impossible cuts.

Outside chance on the other paths: we just roll the dice on hyperinflation, try to grow out of this with magically productive AI, wrestle back fiscal restraint (yeah, austerity will work this time for real), or actually pull off the "clean default" (a decade of 10% inflation reported as 4% CPI with bond baggies getting paid 3%).

No, it emphasizes that we are bumping up into the problem, it is getting exponentially worse, and rationally balancing the budget to pay the debt down to reasonable level (with non-inflated dollars) is a delusional pipe dream.

Mumu only come out at night
The lean and hungry type
Nothing is new, I've seen Bobo Before
Watching and waiting
Ooh, she's sitting with you but her eyes are on the door

Money's the matter
If you're in it for love
You ain't gonna get too far
Watch out boy she'll chew you up
(Oh here she comes)
She's a bobo eater

kek. the US isn't trying to pay down all its debts in the next decade nor is it required to retard. All the US has to do to not default is just keep paying the interest it owes, a thing it can very easily do for a very very long time (especially since most of its debt is owed to itself).

Anon, stopping the payment of interest is a default. Having the Fed print money to buy trillions more worth of bonds is a default. Borrowing more to pay the interest just so you can survive another year is a death spiral that drives yields to more and more crushing levels leading to, you guessed it, a default.

These things are exponential. And, again, we're already this fucked during *good* economic times.

We can do that in a stable, nominal way if we keep inflation between, say, 5% and 10% for a decade. Don't spook bondholders (so they only demand 3%) and that's the "clean default" I mentioned earlier. Pretty much what we did after WW2.

We can also do that through insane productivity gains. AI is the obvious tool here but that leads to waves of mass unemployment, which is destabilizing as fuck. A couple years of 10% growth but millions of laid off call center employees burn down DC? I guess that could be defined as a win?

Invest in stocks that have low volatility. Invest in stocks that are cheap in relation to current profits and sales. Invest in stocks of companies with strong balance sheets and stable, growing businesses.

And then comes the critical bit: Wait for a bear market.

Because it’s not until a bear market that these stocks will really shine, crushing the market indexes and setting you on the path to an early and prosperous retirement.

This at least is the theory laid out in a new paper by David Blitz, head of quantitative research at Netherlands-based fund management firm Robeco. Blitz, a highly-regarded number-cruncher who has been producing interesting research papers for the better part of 20 years, has taken a deep dive into the oldest debate on the Street: Can an ordinary investor beat the market, meaning the indexes like the S&P 500, or not?
