No hes right. Its fairly easy these days to swap the DB out, and you can just click a button to put your django code in a container that autoscales. My code is always DB agnostic anyway. The only difficult parts of running a large website is dealing with hosting, payroll, legal, etc.

>you can just click a button to put your django code in a container that autoscales.
lolno, that is not how it works when you're talking about online services that have BILLIONS of daily users and deal with petabytes of data. You can get away with little inefficiencies at small scales that you absolutely can't at larger ones. It's not about which database you use, but how it's organized, the efficiency of the queries, and the efficiency of the backend code. Django's ORM adds an extra layer between the application and the database, which slows your queries down by a little bit. On small scales, it doesn't matter, but multiplied across millions of tweets and notifications being sent every single second? These things start to matter. Twitter started off as a simple Ruby on Rails project but had to be completely rewritten as soon as it started getting big.

That being said, it definitely shouldn't take 1,000 developers to run something like Twitter. Maybe like 50-100 engineers should be enough. You need some manpower to set up and manage all the infrastructure, manage the data centers, etc. and a small team of software developers for each of the microservices that Twitter is running on. The rest is just administrative bloat and diversity hires

Time complexity is pure math, you don't even need a test to measure the efficiency of an algorithm. The reason places like Twitter do multiple rounds of whiteboard coding interviews is to test whether you understand these concepts or not, they're fundamental to all of software development

You're right, I have no intimate knowledge of your application, I just really doubt that it would actually scale to billions of users as-is, as you claim, when it's just something you slapped together in a couple days. If you've ever spent any time working in the industry, then you should know that this stuff isn't exactly always easy. The fact that you think scaling to that size only takes "one click" and is as simple as putting your application in a Docker container leads me to believe that I'm likely correct in my assumptions
