Spot could go back down to 20 bucks next month(I doubt it though), but big premiums are here to stay unless something crazy happens. The U.S. mint is leading the charge with insane premiums. Silver Eagles are unavailable for purchase. The price is $76 for an uncirculated eagle and they are sold out. The cheapest eagle of ANY year is $45 right now via retailers as a result. You can get lower premiums right now though on plenty of stuff. Check out findbullionprices.com or something similar. Most of the dealers are reputable and its a quick and dirty way to find the cheapest online prices. Looks like there's kilos and 40% kennedys for <$3/oz premium.

Metals were cheap because the price of money was cheap. The fed ran low interest rates for the last decade which meant western businesses and people could just loan all the money they wanted. No one cared about or needed precious metals until the easy money went away.

Then the US locking Russia out of the SWIFT system by weaponizing the dollar was the big red flag to the world that the dollar was no longer safe. Because it's the only global currency, the only thing left for them to fall back on is gold and the demand skyrocketed. I don't see them coming down in the next year or two. Maybe in a short term, but if anything it's likely to go up because the banking crisis is likely just getting started which drives up physical demand.

All a "premium" really is is the disconnect between paper trading on a futures contract for precious metals as a commodity and the price of getting the actual product. The premium is really just the actual market price of the physical metal.

If the western financial system manages to get through the year with no more rough surprises, premiums should drop. The fed will keep raising rates until something breaks though, because they are obsessed with getting inflation to their golden 2% mark. We're at around 4 - 5% right now and the banking system almost collapsed from that. So as long as they keep trying to push for that 2%, more will break. People will flock to metals for certainty and insurance.

Everyone has seen silver 'pump' thousands of times by now and realizes it doesn't mean anything.
Everyone has seen people get super excited when line go up and super excited when line go down, and they realize it doesn't matter.

Even a karat bar (looks like a bill but with a piece of gold in it) of gold isn't that low at a nearby precious metals shop, not even while it's on sale. At the same time 4.22 USD ain't much so if it doesn't become a habit why not?
That said, as someone who bought lots of robot damashii (gundam figures) but then decided I'd filled enough space and stopped buying, only to encounter precious metals years later, I don't look back with regret on not buying more cool mechs.
I don't regret having the ones I do. Sure they're all cool and even last week Bandai put up a figure for pre-order whose design I dreamed of having and would like to have, but odds are good you won't look back regretting passing up most merchandise.
