what happens if you're shorting a stock and it gets delisted? are your gains forcibly realized or does the trade just get deleted and your money taken/returned?

You lose everything, a short is when you borrow an asset to sell it and buy it back lower and profit the difference, you can't buy back lower if the asset is no longer liquid (on sale)
