Also looking at the code they have right now you can't find anything special, it's all pretty basic stuff. The whitepaper seems interesting but this looks like something that will take years of development.

We're way past proof of concept at this point.
It would be like a beta where future users and projects like Request/ZeppelinOS will get a test run and they'll stay in touch with CL developers to fix possible bugs for the final release as well as prepare their own platforms to implement Chainlink.
This is standard practice, even game developers do this.
