I’m extremely cheap and I still tip. You are forced to unless you want people to judge you. I care about what my friends think so I reluctantly tip 15% on all meals. If I’m by myself I wouldnt go out to a restaurant so tipping wouldn’t matter. If it’s take out or a coffee? Fuck you im tipping zero. Uber? Fuck you also. Bar tabs are another weird one. What I do is open a tab and close after the night. I write cash on the tip line and leave $1. I look less cheap.

Originally it was just an incentive to give good service. Over time it just became expected and servers were allowed to get paid under the table with the expectation that they'll be supplemented with tips, so now even if you get lousy service so you don't tip, you're the asshole for causing financial harm to this person.

There are certain situations in the US where you can pay your workers under minimum wage, provided that there is a way for them to earn more. The reason for these exceptions is that it allows for the restaurant, or what ever business, can pay their employees less and keep profit margins higher. However, if at the end of the pay period, the employee's tips don't breach the minimum wage threshold, they are forced by law to meet it. Also, now it is perceived as a status/character statement to tip well at restaurants.

Tipping's one of those location-specific things.

I'm a Bong, and back home a tip is genuinely just an optional thing to do if you're feeling nice/want to impress dinner guests/whatever. Same with a lot of continental Europe, although the urban French and Italians are getting a little American in their attitudes to tipping these days.

In Hong Kong, though, tipping is not really a thing, instead a mandatory 10-20% service charge is just added to your bill and that's the end of it.

In Japan, tipping is completely not understood and they will literally chase you down the road to return your change to you.

In Abu Dhabi, where I live now, it's a bit of both. There's usually a service charge, and you may also leave an additional cash tip for the waiter if you want to flex or just be nice.

With Americans, tipping may as well be considered mandatory. The reason they care is basically just that they are paid slave wages in anticipation of the tips, thereby effectively building tips into the compensation model and making them quasi-mandatory.

the way we set up restaurants is we have the customer tip based on the quality of the waiter's service. If we did not do this the restaurant would just charge the extra amount for the food. It is an incentive program for the waiter to serve the table well. Stop crying about it, it basically makes sense. I've been to Europe and the waitstaff are fucking useless.
