So here's the deal. I'm a perma-NEET and turn 32 tomorrow and I've started thinking about my financial future. I quit high school at 16 and have been living with my folks since then. I tried working at a grocery store for a few weeks but I quit. So long as I do chores around the house like laundry and cooking, they pay me an allowance and let me stay. My dad is in 70 and worked for several years in a high position at a software company. My mom is a year younger and had her own optometry practice. In other words, there's probably a lot of cash between them, but I'm afraid to bring up the subject. Realistically, could I live off of their money after they're dead if I sold the house and moved in an apartment or RV?

Since you set the bar so low and you've cruised by this long, you probably have a solid chance of scoring the jackpot, but I have some suggestions.
1. Go get your GED or something so your parents will think you are finally turning it around, this will make them happy and it will win you points. Doing small things like this will make them feel better about leaving you their inheritance. Bonus: get a part time job, get a drivers license.
2. Don't sell the house, as long as you can pay the taxes and other associated costs, you are going to be better off owning the home, plus you can always sell it down the line if things change.
3. Make a budget, estimate how long you're going to live for and be very disciplined. Conservatively you should try to live off the least amount of money possible to stretch it. Investing your money is smart as long as you are doing long-term investing and not gambling ie 10-30 yr investments.

Assuming the house is paid off, keep it and live there. Reinvest the cash so you get quarterly payments to live off of and to pay the property tax, insurance, utilities, etc. Selling your mom’s optometry practice might pay pretty well.
